I posted about this feeder topic about a year ago. (quail)

some of the members of the local herp club and I did a big rodent pro order and i got myself a bag of 100 day old quail along with a bunch of rat pups. last night while feeding my snakes i offered one quail to my smallest female thayeri and she went nuts for it. i have fed quail to my male thayeri and a female mexmex my girl freind had for a while, and they also went nuts for them. i was told a while back that quail were far superior than mice as far a nutritional value goes and that they teld to have a faster growth rate for a snake that feeds on them. i was also told that the Beta Carotine (sp) brings out a more vibrant color in the snake than that of a snake soley on rodents. so i guess what i am wondering is if anyone else here feeds quail to their mexicana species, or any king for that matter i would be curious to know what you all think.

thanks
Adam

Hey Adam,

Sounds like that female is gonna be very happy and well cared for there. She looks great and I'm sure she likes having things to climb around on again. She had that here before I moved her into the shallow-tub rack.

I read the same info about the quail and did a little test run with them also this past year. I didn't do a side-by-side comparison so what I'm sharing is just my experience with one snake. Early this year I bought an '04 Mexican Black, l.g.nigrita, picked up a 100 count bag of those day old quail from Rodent Pro and fed him those exclusively once he was big enough to take them down. As you probably know, MBK's have ravenous appetites and I let him eat as many as he wanted. I normally wouldn't feed my snakes that much, but the quail have minimal fat content and the MBK grew to a very healthy 38" yearling by the end of the summer, never getting the least bit fat until I switched him over to mice (he ate the whole bag of quail). While feeding on the quail, that guy looked awesome. He was muscular, very solid, strong and super glossy. I also noticed that his fecal was minimal compared to mice, which tells me that there is minimal waste when the quail were metabolized, not as much muscle tissue and less fat. As far as the benefits of the beta-carotene and color... he was jet black so I can't comment on that one. I've had MBK's before, one other male included and if you can call this a side-by-side comparison... none ever grew nearly as fast and remained in such great condition as this last guy fed on quail.

The only con I could see is that the snake seemed to process the quail quicker and needed to eat more to stay satisfied... not a lot of meat on a day old quail and it cost more to feed so I gave them up.

My personal opinion, an un-educated one, is that the snake will reach full adult size on mice eventually and be just as healthy if fed properly and it costs a whole lot less. For someone who wants to hurry them up and can handle the expense, there may be some advantage to quail. Let me know how it goes over there with your mexicana on quail, I would be interested to know what you think.

A 38" yearling, thats pretty impressive. well i also feed rat pups and my girlfreind and i have a mouse and rat breeding colony also so she is getting a mixed diet, nothin like home grown mice fed on monkey chow, fresh veggies, rat chow, and a last meal of Vit-All. it would definatly be too expensive to feed quail exclusivly and i would be afraid of running out and then having the snake be stuck on only quail, i know we are talking king snakes, but it is a posibility. but i am going to take notice of her colors because of the beta carotine in the quail feathers. well thanks for responding mike have a good day

I have a young adult California Kingsnake that I wouldn't mind treating occasionally. I just bought him a month ago (my first snake), so I don't have any point of reference. He's a very aggressive eater. I can't imagine spoiling his appetite, but I wouldn't want him stuck on quail. He'll take fuzzies and pinkies in one feeding. Maybe he'd take a hopper and a day-old quail in the same feeding.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.
