Weight gain. Problem?

buffysmom Nov 20, 2005 03:46 PM

I have my 3 females in the same cage. They have a bowl of mealies available at all times. A few days ago I checked everyone out & Geo looked bloated. Her belly was huge! I palpated & felt no hard spots. She has never been exposed to a male. I weighed her & found she's gained 20 grams since mid August. I weighed all the other girls & my male & no one has gained more that a few grams in the same amount of time. No one has lost weight either.
Is this a problem? She's now at 76 grams. I bought her in 2003 as a sub adult at 14 grams. I believe she's the oldest of my females, but I'm not certain about Ginger's age, so she may not be...
I took these pics of her today.

Nice looking Leo, but yeah she's does look bloated. Even though she's never been with a male she still could lay infertile eggs. If you can turn her over and look at her stomach you can usually see the eggs through her skin. My female looks fat like that right before she lays, but hers are due to breeding. If there are no eggs, I'd keep an eye on her, bloating can also indicate parasites. Let us know if you find anything out

I don't think it's bloat because bloat wouldn't show as weight gain. I palpated her belly & don't feel anything, so I don't think it's infertile eggs. She's gained about 20 grams since August. Why would she gain so much weight when none of the others have? Is she hitting a natural breeding age & "bulking up" for that, or what?

I wouldn't worry about it overly much really though I would watch her for infertile eggs...she just looks like she's finally coming completely into maturity. I have one 4 year old female who weighs in at almost 80 grams at the moment. She's huge both in length and weight...bigger even than the male I have her with so the weight gain alone isn't a bad thing altogether. I don't believe in over-weight leos mostly because they're designed to stock up fat supplies just in case a bad year comes around. I also have one tang albino female who drops pretty much all her weight during breeding season...lays 9 clutches of eggs and then is back up to breeding weight within a month of having that last clutch...she worries me all the time but hasn't had a problem gaining the weight back and becoming a pudgy thing again within a few weeks.
