Keeping pet rats and large snakes(probably a stupid question)

cee4 Nov 20, 2005 07:06 PM

Do you think this is possible? Its been a long time since Ive kept a rat for a pet but Im thinking about it seriously..If it has been running around on my computer desk and around the furniture will this trigger a feed response if Im holding my snakes(of course they arent out at the same time)? I realize I will need to keep my hands washed but is this just not a good idea?

Sounds like a perfectly fine idea to me. I wouldnt worry about anything

as long as you wash your hands, a snake isnt going to try to eat your keyboard because it smells like a rat.

Im never sure about how to take things on these boards sometimes...And I know its kind of a stupid question so I figured Id catch it for asking .Do have pet rats? My snakes could care less about the dogs or cats but seriously rats ARE dinner..And Ive only got one snake that I wouldnt care to get bit by, the rest are smaller..

No no one was trying to be sarcastic...If they say outrageous answers to commonly asked questions then yes they are being sarcastic. But serriously no you won't have a problem with one snake and one pet rat.

I think that's a pretty good question. My question to you is, what kind of snake are we talking about? If it were me, I'm not worried with my Ratsnakes/corns, gartersnake, hognose, etc. Now if I have one of my getula kings out, be it my Florida, Eastern, or Mexican Black king, I don't want rodent smell anywhere, anytime, anyhow. Just my .02

I actually do have an Eastern king but he is a yearling and kinda small( a year old and only 26inches) so I dont think he would be a problem, I guess I was more worried about my boa.Her previous owner fed her live only and she does have a strong feed response, but she is getting better cause she only gets prekill from me in a special feeding bin. But I do like to hold her quite a bit..

At one point I kept a boa, two burms, pet rats and feeder rats in the same room without a problem. Wash your hands and don't let the snakes and rats out at the same time...
