Last breath.

WillHayward Nov 21, 2005 06:46 AM

Godzilla took his last breath minutes ago. So long jungle beast, it has been one hell of a ride.

It's not that I am sad I spent money on you, or paid expensive vet bills. But that another rare Chameleon is dead. Each one that dies in Captivity is one less that could have brought a species out of risk, both in the wild or in reptile keeping.

So long.

Will....I am so sorry. I was very caught in his story. You did so good with him and at the very least, his last days were spent in a safe place.

Thanks all. Im not really sad about it, but rather dissapointed. Its one less Mellers Chameleon to add into creating a solid breeder to produce CB Mellers for the Reptile industry.

Right now I am trying to donate the frozen body for research. I have an Exotic-Vet that lives in the same area as me I think, who has a daughter who I went to highschool with. Now I'm just trying to track her down and offer the body for research. If, not then I'll go back to looking for the correct person to talk to at the University of Guelph, in Ontario Canada, which is a renowed Veteranarian Research School. I just keep talking to clueless receptionists.

I'll advise if something arises.

It is very upsetting to watch a lizard or any animal go down hill, takes a PIECE of us. Leaves you with a certain sadness that seems to linger, wondering what you may have done different.
I know how hard you tried, but with these guys (wc's) it's sometimes a losing battle as we so often see.

Hopfully he's climbing HIGH into the trees NOW, and healthy and gorgeous forever

Hope you feel better soon,

Take care,

Importers and Pet shops can be very cruel to their animals, especially when it comes to the care and husbandry of chameleons...

But you went more than out of your way to do everything you could for Godzilla. At least he didnt have to go in small, crowded terrerium in a petshop. Very sorry though, Gozilla has my prayers tonight!

The first two are after 14 hours in the freezer. The last is about 30 minutes prior to death.

Today I will hear back from a University to see if they would like to take it for a class study.

Hey Will, sorry to hear about this loss. You did your best.

As for donating it to the U, I wonder if they could use it or not. I say this because I know that tissue deteriorates after being frozen (found this out when I had a cat that died and was on ice for me until spring, then the shelter I got it from wanted an autopsy done. The path lab could not determine cause due to this deterioration, though we were pretty sure it was neurological). I am certainly no expert and they may be able to use it anyway since they are not looking for cause.

Thanks lele, just dissapointed is all.

And I totally mind blanked when it died... I knew I shouldn't have frozen it but rather just refridgerated it. But I wasn't in right mind. It died as I was supposed to be walking out the door to work. So I was still asleep and tired.

Oh well. Until I can afford a Taxidermist, it'll stay in my freezer.

I would still check with Univ. They may still be able to use it some way. I understand the "get it into the freezer" mind set. When I was loosing my trio of R. brevicaudatus the freezer was the place they went. The only one that I had an opportunity to send out for necropsy (knew by then not to freeze it) never made it b/c my alternator in my car went on the way to the vet who was going to preserve it in formulin (sp?) so it could be shipped to a vet in FL. I guess I was simply never to learn what killed my little family

Check with Chris Anderson (chamnews) if he knows of any use for it. Any help to the cham community is valuable - we all benefit.
