availablility of uromastyx in Canada SUCKS!

gexy Nov 21, 2005 08:00 AM

This is sooo discouraging to me! I'm the only Canadian(that I'm aware of)who is trying to focus solely on the propagation of captive uromastyx species. After several years of searching I have aquired 2.2 ornates, 2.2 Saharans, 0.1 somalian(Can't find a male to save my life!),1.1 mali. I will add that I'm not in this game so much to make money as to make captive bred uromastyx available in Canada. IF you can find any species of uros in Canada 99% are wild caught imports that, as most uro addicts know, are often challanging to acclimate. My issue is I have produced captive bred saharans for the past 2 yrs and have a hard time finding homes for them, which is also very discouraging. I don't see any reason why uromastyx shouldn't be as popular as the common bearded dragon or even more so! Genetically, the colour and pattern possibilities seem to be endless. You Americans are so lucky to have access to such a great variety of uro species through breeders like Lindsay Pike & Doug Dix who have put so much effort in to captive breeding the species. Judging by the # of posts on this forum uromastyx are kept and loved by many in your country. So nice to see!
Anyway, I needed to vent. This seemed like a good forum to do so. Thanks for reading!

What a great picture! a herd of Uros!

We are spoiled here in the states. I am not sure what else to say, but you have my sympathy!

I agree and being in Nova Scotia it is even worse. I have over the past year acquired 2.2 adult cb ornates and 1.1 adult wc sudanese and 1.2 geyri wc (they are still very young. I have taken the past while acclimating them and getting them used to their new surroundings and me. I will probably look at breeding them next year in an attempt to try to get the availability or uros in Canada up and especially captive bred. Hopefully between the few of us we can change the situation of uros in canada.

oh my, that picture is too cute for words.
i don't really know what to tell you either. maybe if you know someone who does educational reptile talks for kids, they could add uros to the list of animals that are talked about.
i don't know how much stuff you do online, but maybe make a webpage and get your friends (or your children, i have no idea how old you are or what your life is like, ha ha) to link your page on to their webpages for more exposure.
those are all the thoughts i have for right now!

hey gexy, you have some real beautiful hatchlings there
I am planning to breed my saharans in a year or so and was wondering if you could give a little information on your breeding setup, incubation temps, incubation time, etc. Im really excited to breed them but the lack of information out there on breeding these beautiful lizards is a bit discouraging.

my male saharan

the girls im raising up (i need new pics of them, they were about 1 month out of the wild for these pics, and have gained lots of weight )

I also may breed my mali this summer or next if she hits a healthy size in time

Sure! I can tell you what worked for MY uros. I say this because some other people breeding uromastyx may not agree with my process. The uros you start with must be 100% healthy, chubby and eating well before attempting the brumation process. I start this process the last week in October the beginning of November. I turn the lights one to two hours earlier in the evening. continue to gradually decrease the hours of light and heat through out the month. I will also feed them less. By the end of nov/beginning of Dec. I turn off all heat sources and leave them in darkness. their last meal should have been 2 weeks prior.(Their stomache must be completely empty before turning off all heat sources). After about a week I remove them from their enclosure and put them in to seperate dark coloured rubbermaid containers. I leave them for about 80-90 days at temps of 65F. You must check on them a couple per week so if there is any sign of problems or declining health you can reverse the process immediatley. At the end of feb you can begin to reverse the process. put them back in their enclosure. at first I only turn on the undertank heater. then I gradually add light and then the heat lamp for a few hours. after 1-2 weeks they will usually begin basking and eating small amounts. The temp during the 2 weeks will go from 65F -85- 90F. by the end of March The temps will be back to normal with a basking spot of 120F. By this time the male should be actively pursuing the female trying to copulate. When she is ready she will let him. Mine usually bred everyday for about 10 days. 4 weeks later She had eggs. The first year she produced 16 eggs one of which wasn't fertile. The second year she produced 19 eggs, only 13 were fertile. their offspring have always been healthy little buggers with big appetites!
Good luck!
