What to look for when purchasing a Honduran?

rekadan Nov 21, 2005 12:31 PM

Greetings All!

I am on the lookout for a pair of tangerine Hondurans, but have been discouraged by the locality discussion several posts below.

I've been through the locality issue with my Rosy Boas and Thayeri and feel pretty confident when adding new rosies and thayeri to my collection, but I'm at a loss when it comes to Hondurans. What should I look for and what questions should I ask? Any thing that I should avoid?

Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I have never heard much about Hondos concerning locale, it is either morph related blood or not...that seems to be the things people discuss. I think you may want to check with Tim Gebhard of Vivid Reptiles. He is an anti morph guy that has been working with pure Hondos for a long time. He could probably help you out.

I guess my concern is not verifiable locale, but pure blood. I'll keep the pure locales within my Rosy Boa collection.

I don't fully understand all of the Honduran morphs or the bloodlines used to produce them. Are they pure Honduran or where intergrades used to produce the various morphs? I guess that I need an education on the various morphs.

BTW: The MBK's that I bought from you are doing great.

Glad to hear you like your Kings. As far as Hondurans go there's always going to be a few people, actually there could be many people who doubt their purity but this can be said of all snakes... The thing I remember from way back when was the Tangerines, the outrageously orange snakes that would stop people in their tracks before the morph craze became huge. I had also seen many dark ugly Hondurans too, and I liked both seeing this was back in my pet shop shopping days in the 80s. I was just happy to see snakes in general. I would suggest trying to find a copy of the article in Reptiles Magazine authored by Terry Dunham, that may actually be on the Albino Tri Colors web site. It is well worth a look, I really enjoyed it myself and think there's some good history to be found within it. I will email you, sorry I have been out of touch Tom Stevens

I've only seen one person advertise Honduran hybrids. For the most part, breeders especially dislike hybrids (mutts). Since there are so many Honduran morphs (money to be made), it is unlikely that any serious Honduran breeder would consider crossing his snakes with other milksnakes. Hondurans also are considerably larger than most other commonly kept milks, which probably makes it trickier for "hybrid fans" to pollute the gene pool by crossing them with other snakes.
