Is this a ball python

toshamc Nov 21, 2005 06:01 PM

I have never seen this book before and just ran across it up for sale. At first I didn't realize that it was a ball python book because the snake on the cover doesn't look very ballish. Anyone have this book? Does it tell you about this snake or have a full body picture? Just an odd normal or something else?

Tosha, I've not seen the book, so no help there, but except for the weird colored eyes it looks like a ball to me.

I have seen that book, but couldnt tell you for sure whether its a ball or not. But the "nose" structure looks different, could just be a wierd angle though? hard to say

Hmmm - I'm sure it's gotta be a ball right, it's on a BP book - but the shape of the nose looks different (maybe cause of the odd coloring - the wierd head pattern - the eye and it looks like it has white on its back??? I'd love to see the whole thing. Really looks rather Angolan to me.

Yes it's either a ball or angolan. Isn't it weird that the yellow stripe on its head goes up to form a circle that kind of enclose's the brown pigment LIKE the angolan? But I can't see the other side of the head since it's just a pic of one side of the head. How many books do you own tosha?

Hi Toshamc,

It's an Angolan and the link below has the full body picture right from the book:

It isn't very good though. Basically informative in a "general sence" for a new snake owner. I think that may be an angolan on the cover~ but not the same angolan they have pictured on page 6 of the book.

I just took a quick flip through the book~ looks like most the pics are of BPs. I can't find a reference to who supposedly owns the snake on the cover~ I don't know why they used an angolan there......OOOPS!

You'd think the editors of the book would have actually caught that a Ball Python book doesn't have a Ball Python on the cover!

is to find two pictures... (head shots) of a ball python and a angolan python... i would say its a angolan because of the patterns near the back of the head... and the shape of the mouth area.. its too rounded and out too far... i think... or maybe its one of those crosses? im not sure... to me it does not look like a ball... if someone was making a ball python book, then why wouldnt they put a ball on the cover? just my thoughts...

I'm looking at 3-5 pages of pictures of angolans (head shots) and all of them (if true angolan) has the yellow marking going up the head closing off the brown spot in the middle of the head. Where as ball pythons have a line going straight above the eye going back to the neck and not curving upward. So end of discusion its an angolan. A lot of skilled people that own both will know by easily by head shot and/or body shot. It's really easy to tell them apart by the way, even with only a head shot.

ginebig Nov 22, 2005 10:03 AM

And how often do ya let THAT one out ta play???

toshamc Nov 22, 2005 10:22 AM

Looking at some of the new morphs there are some with some wicked head patterning (circus and powerball to name just two off the top of my head) which is why I thought it could be a ball - aside from the obvious fact that it's on the cover of a ball python book - LOL - I would have to agree that it does look rather angolan (as I said earlier) - but looks a bit more round than I'm used to looking at - ours has a flat head - may just be the angle of the photo. Was hoping it said somewhere inside what it was - but I guess I'll assume it is an Angolan and leave it at that.

Thanks everyone!
