When should I worry? Help?

kimota Nov 22, 2005 11:23 AM

I've had my veiled for 3 or 4 years. He's never been even the slightest problem. He's totally tame but I still try not to overhandle him. He's never given me any issues with feeding.

Over the last couple of days I've noticed crickets wandering around his cage that he's just not eating. In fact, I haven't seen him eat in about three or four days. Sometimes they're right in front of his face and he doesn't seem interested AT ALL. At what point should I worry?

To be fair, he's had his share of stress over the last week. I set up a new pro-mist system and it involved moving his cage across the room twice to get it set up just right. And I also replaced his ficus tree that had just about died all at the same time.

But again... At what point should I worry about him not eating?

As a general rule, I would say always worry early. Problems with Chameleons are often too far along to stop, reverse or fix by the times you see warning signs. Don't panic, but maybe spend a couple hours a night watching it from afar. See if you can recognize anything that may be important.
You should also be offering a larger variety of food than just crickets, not saying you arn't but you only described it ignoring crickets.
Check your temperatures again, since you have made some modifications to the cage, and moved it, something may have changed alturing, lighting and temperatures.
Lastly, I'd say, keep your distance for a while. Stay out of sight.
Good luck!

It does sound like stress from the new setup, but to make sure, give him a week, maybe confine the feeders to a bin (bigger container than a bowl so they are almost free ranging) so you can keep a closer eye on what he is eating, and you could start weighing him occasionally to see if he's losing ground. Chams can go a week without eating much at all if they are healthy, and there would not be much if any weight loss.

Couldn't agree with Will more, and it is best to err on the side of being pro-active. The cage re-arrangement could have mixed things up a bit much. In this case you have two pro-active options: 1) try alternative foods, such as a few superworms, or 2) if he doesn't appear to be eating shortly, return everything as best you can as it was. We have had many chameleons here who shut down eating when moved to a new cage, but pick it up again like normal when returned to their old cage.
