8 year old Bearded Dragon loosing weight

webertk421 Nov 22, 2005 03:11 PM

My 8 year old Bearded Dragon, Ermac, who I have raised from a hatchling, has been deteriorating over the last couple of years. She stays fairly active, her personality is still intact, she eats as well as she ever has. (She doesn't eat many greens, she much more prefers crickets/worms/grasshoppers.) Last year she started to get unstable with her hind legs and falls over when she walks around. Now she is loosing weight, I can see her hip-bones, and spine. She isn't acting sick so it just seems like her time is almost up. Does anyone have experience with a very old Bearded Dragon? Is there anything that I can do to help her? Should I feed her anything special or up vitamins or calcium intake? I have UVB lights and another bearded dragon in a different cage who is doing very well, so I'm confident that they are getting what they need, I just want to make her as comfortable as possible.
There still doesn't seem to be much information about Geriatric Dragons out there.

Hello...in response to your question about overall health. I can't believe that your beardie doesn't eat greens as that is their main diet bugs should only be a way of supplementing powdered vitamins in their diet...? Let me refer you to a web page that is just awesome with all kinds of info. from hatchlings on up. And the people that chat there are great to and from all over the US. The page is www.drangontank.com tell them beardiesrule sent you...GOOD LUCK !!!

Thanks for the response. She does eat greens/fruit but only a few bites at a time before she looses interest, but she will eat until she is full if the meal is grasshoppers, crickets or worms. She has always been this way.
