I've been cycling my area of North Carolina for twenty years and I've always enjoyed spotting Eastern Box Turtles traveling on their way. I've stopped and moved hundreds of them off the roads. Once my children were born, I built an outdoor pen and I began to bring them home and we would keep a few of them for a short period of time and then release them. It was the kid's first experience with caring for animals. It got to the point where the kids would see me returning from a bike ride and they would come running to see what critters I had brought home. I used to see dozens of turtles in the warmer months. Sadly, I rarely see a box turtle anymore. Their local range is crisscrossed with busy roads and they are quickly getting extinguished from our area. I only saw a few this season, but this one was one of the very best I have ever encountered. I had to bring this one home and photograph his brilliant color. His shell markings are above average but his head and forelimb markings and coloration are superb. Hope you don't mind something a bit different but the forum has been pretty slow lately. I actually found this guy back on September 17 but I've been too busy to mess with the photos.
