everglades racer range

priapus Nov 23, 2005 10:15 AM

The snakes in question were caught just barely south of I-75 and just west of I-95. Some sources I've read suggest that this area contains everglades and southern racers (maybe integrade of two). However, other sources say southerns don't exist below I-75 and I hope this source is correct because I'd like for this pair to be 100% paludicola subspecies so I am able to produce captive bred everglades racers. I'm not sure whether or not this has been done before. This would be so much easier if the snakes had lost their juvenile pattern (I will post pictures as soon as I get batteries for my camera). Any further help on the everglades racer range would be appreciated. Thanks in advance,

Rick

I have readed that Everglades Racers are found south of Lake Okeechobee, and down to the most southern parts of florida. This is just what i have found searching the internet and books and such, somebody may need to second my opinion. I hope it helped. Lets see them pictures.

The bad thing with range maps, is that humans usually apply such boundaries as an interstate. Snakes, however, do not follow these rules and any range map should only be used as a general guideline. The priapus ranges down to the southern edge of Lake Okeechobee. The paludicola ranges north to just north of highway 41. Inbetween the two ranges is the intergrade zone. Within that zone it would be possible to have a pure priapus, pure paludicola, or an intergrade. I would venture to say the snakes you have are probably intergrades, although they can show heavy influence of either ssp.

Post a pic as soon as you can and Ill see if I can ID them for you. Try and get some close ups of the head/eye as well as some good body shots.

I found a beautiful priapus down in ENP, about 30 miles from the southern tip of FL. We had no idea what it was as we rolled up on a neon blue looking snake in the roadway. Well as soon as we got out of the truck, he took a few strikes at us, and was off! Never got a pic of him, but that is one impressive colubrid!
