BCL FEEDING

demetrius Nov 23, 2005 08:39 PM

I have a young 05 Boa Constrictor Longicauda female . I was advised to feed her like I would a BCC . Due to the fact that most of my boa experience is with BCI I am still a bit unsure if I am feeding her the correct sized prey . She is around 24 inches in length and lean. I have been giving her rat pinks , mice hoppers and small juvi mice once a week . She is gaining weight and growing steady and the the prey leaves a small lump in her. Should I change the way I feed her ? Ihave no pans on breeding her but all I want is a nice healthy snake . I would love to hear your opinions . Thank you in advance .

i feed most of my babies and yearlings mice every seven to ten days. i like to wait till the slight bluge has been go for a few days. but bcL's tend to eat when they wont. i only feed live the first couple of times then get them on f/t as soon as i can. if they don't respond to ythe prey item in 30-45 secounds (i knew this seems quick) then i go on to the next baby. I have some yearlings that are tiny and others that are huge, but no matter how extra time i spent with some of the babies they still only eat once every two weeks for the first 8 months then they started eatting every week. My breeding male gets offered a rat every seven days but he only takes it about once ever 6 weeks or so. good luck with your longi they can be a pain but they are by far one of the most fun to work with in my view.

Gus....you never cease to amaze me. Just when I think I must have seen all your animals....you put up something that just blows my mind. What are those and do you have any more? Thanks Andy

If I get into B.C.L. it will definately be from a bloodline like that. The darker the better, when it comes to those beautiful locality Boas. I remember years ago, some of the first bloodlines that Don Hamper worked with, were dark like that and alot of them had an extreme blue irridescense to them. I always wished that I had gotten some of those old original bloodlines......Johnson Herp
