Breeding Question?!?!?

reptileraiser Jul 23, 2003 01:11 AM

I was wondering if anyone could give me advice.
I have 2 res, 1 Male and 1 Female. I am building an outdoor inground pond. I was planing on letting them mate. But I was wondering what the best substrate to put around the pond is for the female to lay her eggs in. I was also wondering if I could let the eggs incubate in The substrate, or if I should remove them and place them in a seperate incubation area.
Also I was wondering if the turtles would hibenate in the winter on their own, since they are both captive raised and never hibernated in their lives.

Thanks in advance for all your help!

-Sand is a good substate to put outside the pond for the female to lay here eggs in.

-If I were you I'd do seperate incubation because turtles won't guard the eggs or anything, they bury them and run off. If you do move them mark the tops of the eggs with a sharpie so they stay in the same position after you've moved them.

-For your last question I'm not really sure what you mean. I'm not sure what you could actually do to teach them to hibernate. I just skip it and bring them inside the house for the winter because hibernation is risky business since the turtles don't always survive.

~Hope this helps.~
