i found a snake in my basement today, i live in connecticut and we just got 5 inches of snow. Everybody wants me to throw it outside but i know it will die, it doesnt look much bigger than a hatchling, what should i do? its not a garter snake it looks more like a corn snake but , greyish with brown spots with black edges,

Sounds like a eastern milk to me, go to a local pet store and buy a ten gallon tank, a water dish, a under tank heater, and some reptibark, and that would be a nice home for it, also try to post some pictures so we can varify the snake totally, and also seeing i think its a eastern milk check out the milk snake forum and ask some questions there. Hope thats some help
Happy Thanksgiving All

It sounds to be a eastern milk to me also. Along with the other supplies mentioned Iwouldalso purchase someting for the snake to hide in but it has to be fairly small so the snake will feel secure. You can probably find something around your house such as a small, flat rock or a small box with a hole cut out for the snake to crawl through. After you set up the cage and place the snake in it, do not disturb the snake for atleast a few days then you might try feeding it(repost and inquire in a few days about feeding if you need help). Good Luck!

here is a pic
i am experienced with snakes, i have two corns, a kingsnake and a ball python, ive never dealt with anything wild, i would rather not put it outside in the snow where it will die anyways but i dont know if i should just let it go in the garage or something? i could keep in it a shoe box size enclosure

Where in the basement did you find it? Is there a refrigerator or other source of heat down there to keep it from freezing? Is the basement finished or is it just a cinderblock basement with a concrete floor and used for storage? How often do people go into the basement?

I'm wondering whether the snake went into the basement knowing that the basement would be a suitable place to spend the winter. If so, maybe you could put it back in the basement to spend the winter as it had originally planned. Obviously, some circumstance might keep you from doing this, but it's another option if you're not in the mood to keep another snake.

It's not how many snakes you have. It's how happy and healthy you can keep them.

The above advice sounds correct to me. It was looking for the right place to sleep the winter. Very glad that is not an issue here.
