Escaped juvenile corn---any suggestions?

funky_r_monkey Nov 24, 2005 02:23 PM

Hi,

I posted this a few days ago in the escaped herp forum, but since it doesn't get much traffic....

We had a juvenile corn escape two days ago; still no sign of him. The room he escaped in was closed, but would have been very easy to get out of. We now have flour across the doorway, and have searched the room and the closet with no luck.

He's only about 16 inches long, and has been feeding on pinkies. Would he be attracted to the scent of larger mice as well as his normal diet? Also, should I keep the house very cool and leave a heat pad/lamp on in that room, or should I keep the house warm in hopes that he'll be more active?

I sick to my stomach. We have 5 cats and a dog inside, all of which were inside the night he got out. The dog pretty much sleeps through the night in our room, so I am hoping she wasn't an issue, but the cats are active all night. That said, I wouldn't think they'd actually EAT the snake, just kill it and leave it in my shoe. The worse part is that we live in a trailer, so there's plenty of places for him to have squeezed into the wall, not to mention heating vents in the floor....

Any help would be very much appreciated.

***Update***

Still no sign of him. We've got flour across the doorways of the two rooms closest to where he escaped, and across the closet doors of both, but no tracks have been left.

Look in the spots that you would least think the snake would go( meaning a spot thats right in front of your face but you dont wanna look there because you dont think he will be there because its no where special), like stuff right near the tank itself. Like book cases, dressers, etc.
Happy Thanksgiving all

hey!, been there done that.what i would suggest is to ,first close the door to the room the snake was in.turn off all lights.next, go in the room &turn on the lights & look around quickly & observe all movement i n the room .i would do this hourly or so. hey it has worked for me. good luck! JEFF

I agree with candb, look for places that seem too obvious. If it sensed the cats or dog, it may just be very cautious and lay low, not being too active. Years ago I had a baby corn escape and after a week of searching high and low, tearing my apartment apart, I started taking his enclosure down (10 gallon tank)and found him hanging out in the striplight right on top of his tank. I assume he was there the whole week since the tank was on a wrought iron stand and if he hit the floor, I doubt he would have gotten back up. Good luck.....Keep us updated.

No sign yet. The flour in front the doors and closet has not been touched. I'm pretty stumped---the entire room's been searched, twice. I'm beginning to fear that she slithered down the vent and out of the house.

Is there any chance that the scent of a full grown mouse would pull her out of hiding, or only a pinky? I've got a ball python that's been feeding on live prey until I can place another order. I hate to leave a pinky or two overnight, only to die for no good reason....

You word it like you are only checking the room it escaped in. You ARE checking the rest of the house aren't you?

Yeah, we're checking the whole house. But I've got my doubts as to whether she would have made it through the gauntlet of cats, to be honest.
