Thinking about getting a blood.

Bighaze Nov 24, 2005 03:17 PM

I'm not new to snakes at all, I have burms, retics, balls, and sand boa's, but I'm thinking about getting a red blood or two.

Can anyone give me a link to a good care sheet on them, and any tips that might not be in a good care sheet?

I'm planing on putting them into large tanks, with a humidity box. In a room I keep heated for my burms, and tics. Would the bloods need more or less heat, do they do good in a heated room, and not with each cage heated? Would they do better in a rack?

I'm still in the VERY early stages of thinking this out, so I could use any input you might have.

Also who has the best Bloods out there? Just normals, but CBB is a must!!

VPI.com has a good caresheet for bloods but since you already keep balls then you are well on your way to bloods, the care between the two is very similar. Also HURRY FOR YOU FOR THINKING OF GETTING A BLOOD!!!! You'll never look back....or be able to have just one Also, NERD, VPI, and Jeff Hartwig are the best choises for top quality bloods, that is if you don't mind spending a little extra. And lets not forget Kevin Marter. He has some of the reddest red bloods out there. Anyway, good luck!!!

I know of VPI, and nerd, but have not beable to find anything on Kevin Marter, or Jeff Hartwig, do they have a website? if so could you message it to me?

Thanks for the reply!

Kevin Marter does not have a site, though he can be contacted through the boards as far as I know he doesnt have any bloods available. Jeff Hartwig has a site http://www.jeffhartwig.com/Reptiles Main.htm but only has blacks, and I believe just has a few males left from this season. Pro Exotics is also a good place for bloods, and there are many other reputable smaller breeders out there as well. Hope that helps.

Thanks for the info.

I'm thinking I wont be getting any till next year, and for some reason, eventhough I have heard they can be nippy, I want a red, I just like the way they look better.

Thanks.

Tanks are usually not a good idea. Bloods like nice small tight enclosures and rubbermaids tend to work best. So I would definately reccomend getting a rack if you plan on getting a few bloods. Tanks are hard to keep temps and humidity right, and bloods are fairly unforgiving when it comes to these requirements. Once you figure out what size blood you are getting it will be easier to reccomend caging for the animal. Babies I would keep in rubbermaids no larger than a 12q until they're around 6 months or so.

I like to get any snake(or reptile for that matter) as babies. I have gotten adults before but like to get young ones more.

As of now(still have a lot to look up) I will be getting two reds, just like them better, but If bloods are like any other snake I've had/have I will be getting blacks too, in time.

There are a few things I don't know, and may-be you all could help me out. Is a Borneo short tail python, the same as a blood? I have gotten some who say thay are the same as black bloods, and others who say they are not the same. With me being new to all of them I would like to know for sure.

Also when I asked for some names of people who would have good bloods, TSE was not named. Is there a reason, or were they just over looked?

Thanks for all of your help with this, Bloods are the first "New snakes" I have even thought of in years, so sorry if I sound a little out of place.

Your questions reference the three species of python and proliferation of confusing common names comes up regularly. If you'll scroll down thru this forum to Oct 3rd, you'll find it dicussed in some detail. And welcome: these are really neat snakes!

Like everyone says, you can't just get one blood they are addictive. As far as your questions, a borneo(python breitensteini) is not a blood, they have the same care requirments, but they are not the same snake. A "black"(python curtus is actually a sumatran short tail but are usually referred to as a black blood. The only real bloods are red bloods( python brongersmai). Hope that helps.

I thank you all, for all the info you have given me. I also see there is a lot more to Bloods, then just how to care for them, and it's going to take me a while to get it all down.

Thanks!
