Rat Problems

shinysnakeskin Nov 25, 2005 03:01 AM

im just wondering if anyone here on this forum has any problems with being around rats. tuesday i went to and got rats for our snakes, the left over rats are in a 10 gallon tank with food and water.
then on weds i woke up not being able to breath, my nose was stuffy, i could feel that my lungs where tight. i cant hold them because i will brake out, and itch. i waited a day to see if my allergic reaction to the rats would go away, i even put the rats in the bathroom with the fan on.
finialy i had enough and went to the er to get breathing treatments done. i had to get 2 of them and iam on anti biotics for an upper resp infection, and for my lungs.
so my question is, does anyone here have allergies towards rats? i used to own them as pets a few years ago. many people have told me that being around them after a while some people can become allergic..
and also im posting this to see if anyone has any ideas about what i can do differently when we get rats for our snakes. like can i put the rats in different bedding? aspen messing with my lungs aswell.
do you think a air purifire would help to collect the dander? i wouldnt mind paying extra money to get hairless rats, i see that they dont upset my lungs and skin as much..
thank you for reading and for any input

Where the hell have I been?
Sleeping, lost, and numb.
So glad that I have found you.
I am wide awake and heading home.

I've heard of a few people who were allergic to them seriously enough they gave up snakes all together. I believe the original breeder of blood boas is allergic to them and thats why he now went back to Tegu's.

You may want to try going with frozen thaw so you don't have to deal with live rats being kept in your home. That would drastically drop the problems.
