I have a watersnake that I captured yesterday while hleping empty a pond. He isn't poisonous, I know that. He has a beautiful rosy colored belly with little triangular spots. His dorsal coloring is black and greenish brown, checkerboard type pattern. Found in Magnolia, Texas.
I cannot provide a picture just yet. I would just like help identifying what he MIGHT be so I can narrow it down from "water snake."

In Magnolia it could be several things. Based on your description, I suspect it might be a young western mudsnake -

although several other watersnakes could be described that way.

I have an online photo guide to the snakes of the Brazos Valley (Bryan/College Station area). That is just a few miles from you so look there and see if you can find a match.

Actually, after a lot of hard research, I found that the little fellow looks EXACTLY like the Diamondback Water snake photos. The head shape is exact too. I'm thinking this is it. Every aspect matches. He is a gentle little snake, too. Has eaten 1 rosy so far. I'm happy!!
