CHN Press: Serving salamander

Nov 25, 2005 08:43 PM

CHINA DAILY (Beijing) 25 November 05 Serving salamander
A restaurant in Beijing's Zhaolong Hotel now sells giant salamander meat, a class two national protected species in China. Its meat sells at 2,180 yuan (US$269) per 500 grams, which equates to around 888 yuan (US$110) per serving. However, the eatery is not breaking the law because the giant salamanders are not wild but imported from an aquaculture company in South China. It has got license from the city government.

The only problem with this is that if a market opens up for the meat of these salamanders, the wild populations will be endangered by poaching. Hopefully the Chinese government will take the necessary actions to prevent this.

The wild populations are already endangered from poaching. This is why they're CITES II listed.

Thats true the wild populations will be endangered. The Chinese goverment like all Asian countries has a long record of never protecting any wildlife that winds up on dinner plates so I hope it doesnt catch on.
