This is getting exciting

CMLReptiles Nov 26, 2005 04:21 PM

I have a 66% het VPI axanthic male that I'm going to be trying to mate with a normal female, and just acquired a 66% het clown male so if one doesn't go, the other can have a shot at her lol. Sadly I only have 1 breedable female right now...but I have 3 35-500g females in the wings for next year, as well as a pair of het albinos...so I'm starting to get really exicted. I also have a trio of black rat snakes cycling for spring. Hopefully this will be a fun year, and hopefully I can prove out those males!

I would be very careful doing what your talking about, since we are talking recessive genes here you may end if with a genetic mess on your hands, meaning if one of the possible hets breeds that one female even 1 time without you knowing or seeing it you could end up thinking the other male sired the eggs and be wrong! All it takes is for 1 sucessful mating by the wrong recessive male and it would take several years before you figure out what happened... Using multiple males is great if they are the same recessive gene or if they are a codom as you can SEE the difference in the codom morphs but with different recessive lines your playing with fire in my book!!! Just my 2 cents , good luck to you, I'd either pick out which one is more important to you or watch them VERY close while the males are in with her.. I have a adult het axanthic VPI male that I will be selling soon as I have a couple of his 50% daughters and I'm picking up a Pastel Het VPI Axanthic male next week to breed to them next winter so if you need a true het male adult let me know! Anthony McCain-McCain's Reptiles. ps the pic is a cool male that I'm working with, he was imported as a baby, looks to be something going on there , haven't bred him to anything YET!

I understand exactly what you're talking about...I was worried about it myself. But I've been keeping a very close eye on the pair. So far they've stayed very close to each other...actually, they barely ever leave each others side...but no breeding as of yet. The female is in shed right now, and I've noticed after shed tends to be the magical time so I'll be watching even closer after that. If I don't see anything, I'll put the pos het clown with her for a couple weeks and see if it does anything. Great looking snake there btw. I'll be contacting you shortly about that het male too.
