Bioactive Substrates for BPs?

Is anyone doing this? I am using Cypress but would really like to go more natural looking in my Visions but I don't know if BSS work for BPs or not.

I would go as far as to say bioactive but rather, natural. We have build a bunch of BP, GTP, RTB habitats and use a mix of soil, sand and then add our group of hetatrphic bacteria and I've found a very low count of salimenilla (sp) in the soil.
