Whats going on with my hatchling.

Vip3ridae Nov 26, 2005 07:03 PM

Hi, I have 2 other balls that I got when they were adults but recently aquired a hatchling spider. Anyway I recently gave my spider hatchling a hopper mouse (pre killed and heated) and surely enough she struck it. But that was 2 hours ago... She is STILL coiled up around it and wont let go. I've tried pulling the mouse a bit but she just sits there in a tight coiled ball. Her head is under her mid body and it looks like she's choking herself or something. The mouse is actually purple now after 2 hours or maybe more. Why is she doing this, what can I do to help her.

The best thing you can prob do is leave her alone for a while. Being a hatchling, she's prob just inexperianced and hasn't learned how to tell if the animal is dead or not and is making sure. I've had snakes do that...i actually have a Green tree python that will constrict it, then drop it to the ground, check that nothing else is around, then eat it.

Wasn't expecting anyone to answer me,But thanks. She STILL hasn't eaten it yet and is still constricting and maybe going on 3 hours soon. I was going to bother her and make her eat it but If you say to leave her alone I will leave her alone, just glad I didn't do anything yet. Thanks.

Just let nature take......

Why are you so worried???

When it's hungry it will eat...

When it's tired..........

Sorry, I don't want to come off too harsh for you, there,

Quinton

No problem, you weren't being harsh and thats why I said I wasn't expecting anyone to answer me. My first hatchling ball and its a spider so ofcourse I'm going to be worried... No problem though, like you said she will eat it eventually, maybe she likes to "make friends" with the mouse....

It took 6 hours (3 hours after my last post) for her to eat... If someone would have told me that they can stay wrapped in a ball for 6 hours and have no after effects I would have said you were lieing. I think the reason she does this is because she ONLY took live for the first few times with her previous owners. I guess She was most likely puzzled as to why the mouse wouldn't breathe or struggle, so much so that she stayed on it for 6 full hours to make sure lol. I love this hobby and bumble bee's in 07 then killer bee's in 09 if the world doesn't end that is

Wow - 6 hours?!?!?!? That would have completely freaked me out (especially with a spider). Hopefully her next feeding will go much smoother! LOL - maybe after she grabs it you should wiggle it around a bit and "put up a fight" until she get a hang of the f/t thing.

Glad it worked out!

told ya she'd finally go for it. Just wait, eventually she'll get so used to prekilled she won't even strike or constrict. I know it sounds weird, but I have snakes that are so used to it they gently take it from me and swallow it lol.

Yup, Thanks cml and tosha. Your damn skippy I was worried about my spider after 6 hours... But all snakes are different so I should have took that into consideration before posting. Most of my snakes are like that to cml, especially my corns, before they use to tackle pre killed and thawed prey but now they just swallow without even striking at the thing. Still glad I posted or else I would have done something stupid. Thanks!
