Joseph Collins, Amphibians & Reptiles In Kansas, Third Edition.

"Subspecies in Kansas: Blaney (1977) analyzed variation in the Common Kingsnake throughout its range and determined that for Kansas the entire state is an area of intergradation between the Speckled Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula holbrooki) and the Desert Kingsnake (Lampropeltis getula splendida)."

Although I call them Speckled Kingsnakes in Kansas. Here is one from Lincoln County that I found in 2004.

I used to live in Kansas from 1974-1986. Although I did more fishing and hunting back then than herping.

I was just taking a stab that this one might be a kansas splendida x holbrooki. I bought it as a desert king, I thought it might be an intergrade. I don't have enough experience with these to have any type of educated guess, any opinions? either way, i think she's pretty.

Later and thanx

Pretty much everyone in KS calls them holbrooki even though they're actually holbrooki X splendida as Kerby pointed out. Here's a really bad pic of one a friend and I found in Russell County, KS earlier this year.

I love the ones with the well defined "circle-backs" (if I can borrow a term from old boa forums) and the real black heads. Maybe next spring I'll get a couple hatchlings, there's been some real nice ones over on the classifieds.

Not a bad pic....It's tough to photo small snakes. Herp forums are becoming photography contest forums! LOL

Thanx for the pic.
