Heat question.

What's more important, the temp of the substrate or the air temp? I had to move my tank to the basement which has been chilly the last few days. The temp is only in the low 60's down there. I had a heat emitter on 1 end of the tank (20 gal. long), but couldn't get the temp any hotter than the high 60's. I went out Sat. and got a heat pad. It's supposed to be for a 30-40 gal. tank but I figured the larger size may benefit me. I put a porcelain tile in the tank on the heat pad to disperse the heat. I placed my temp probe on the tile after a few hours and got a reading of 102 degrees, but if I raise the probe a half inch above the substrate (aspen), it drops to the high 60's. I have a cat and she loves to lay on the top of the tank, I'm afraid to keep the heat emitter on the tank, because it gets really hot and if she knocks it off it may start a fire. I was hoping the heat mat would warm the whole tank, but it doesn't. I've spent so much money on supplies, I can't spend anymore . Any help?

I am assuming you have a wire mesh top. they won't hold heat or humidity. If you put a towel over the top it will help but the best solution is always a custom cage with sliding glass doors IMO. They hold heat and humidity excellently. I will be building my cage soon. Also, I know you already put a lot of time and money into your cage, but an alternative may be a rubbermaid container.... holds heat and humidity better.
