cage size question

buffysmom Nov 27, 2005 01:00 AM

I have 2 tiger salamanders, about 8 inches each & have the opportunity to add 2 more, about 5-6" each. My current 2 are in a 20L with 2 hides & a pool. Can I add 1 or 2 more, or is there not enough room?

Hello, I would not add anymore Tiger Salamanders to your 20 Long. In fact I would upgrade to a 40 gallon breeder tank, just for the two that you already have. What kind of substrate do you use? And how deep is it? I ask this because Tiger Salamanders are burrowers. I use to keep my two Tiger Salamanders in a 40 gallon breeder tank with about 4 to 6 inches of Eco Earth(the Eco Earth sloped down to the water bowl) along with a couple of half round wood hides. The tank was planted with Pothos and Moss. And my Tiger's were about 11 inches long, and I've read that they get up 13 inches from snout to tip of their tail. Also there was about an inch of gravel on the bottom of the tank(for water drainage). Hope this helps .

Thanks. I've decided not to add any more to the tank. I used an entire brick of EcoEarth in their tank, so it's a pretty thick substrate. They have 2 hides & are generally both under the same one.

You could go to targets or many of the online places and order plastic clear sweater boxes for your new sallys.
You could stck it ontop of the 20 gallon long .

Just drill holes on the side, etc and great for sallys though granted not as clear as reg tanks but great if you get extra sallys and dont want another tank.

If you're gonna add two more...I would upgrade to a forty gallon tank...they need about ten gallons per salamander...and depending on how big it is..you might need a bigger pool. Hope it goes well!

Thank you everyone. I decided not to add any more tigers to the tank.
