sCaLeSrFuN Nov 27, 2005 03:15 AM

Hey,

So i got some beardies a few months ago, and tonight the little one has been i dunno spazaming and tensing up and getting really stiff and hard, especially her back legs and after a few minutes, she was fine, but then maybe 15 min later she did it again. It has happened 2x tonight, and I am kinda freaked out, b/c when i found her last time, she was on her back against one of her branches. When she comes to it looks like she is gaspng for air and taking really deep breaths, but then like i said shes ok.... any ideas?! Please help! Thanks!

metabolic bone disease...

i guess the person that sold it to you didn't tell you about the need for UVB lights?

your dragon needs calcium. go out and buy a mercury vapor light. the dragon should come around.

are you dusting crickets?

describing your setup would be helpful:

lighting (wattage, brand UVB, basking, on/off how long?)
diet and supplements (what kinds of feeders, how often do you dut and with what?)
gutload your crickets and other feeders? if so, with what?
temps (basking, ambient)
type of housing (glass, size)
substrate, if any
how old are they?
do you have more than one in an enclosure?

it sounds like it could me MBD (metabolic bone disease) which is caused by insufficient UVB light and calcium/d3 supplementation. But I also recall a fairly recent thread about seizures in beardies.

You should also consider a vet - do you have one lined up? (if not, go to link below and look for listings) Suddenly dusting with lots of calcium is not necessarily the way to go. The vet can determine if it is in fact MBD, do a blood test to determine calcium level and may opt for an injection of calcium or having you give it a liquid calcium supplement.

>>lighting (wattage, brand UVB, basking, on/off how long?)
>>*I have a ceremic heating light and one of the uvb lights, but i think its o nly a 50 watt.
***I would recommend ZooMed Reptisun 5.0 (just my personal preference). The dragon needs to be within 6-12" of the light. make sure get one and fixture that will span the entire top of the tank.

>>diet and supplements (what kinds of feeders, how often do you dut and with what?) *Small crickets about 3 times a wk, dusted in reptil cal, and meal worms every 2 days

***so you only feed them a few days a week? If this is a young bd you should feed them as much as they will eat, 2x/day in about a 15-20 minute period. How small are these crickets? How big is your dragon? Mealworms can be difficult to digest; I would go for silkworms, and waxworms (ww are fatty so should just be a treat).

>gutload your crickets and other feeders? if so, with what?
>>*no, I don't, should I?
>>
***Yes, absolutely. IF you are just buying crickets and feeding them they have minimal nutritonal value b/c most pet stores (if that is where you are getting them) give them commerical feed. there is also more of a chance of parasites and Here is a site with the right foods to feed your dragon so you can gutload (feed) them to your crickets. You can also offer veggies to your dragon. www.beautifuldragons.503xtreme.com/Nutrition.html
www.adcham.com also has a gutload (dry and wet)

>>temps (basking, ambient)
>>*About 85-90, and about 70-75
***what are you using to measure the temps? Does he spend time basking? Make sure not to feedhim too late in the day. he needs several hours of basking to digest before lights out. Young dragons need temps up to 115 degrees on their basking rock.
>>
>>type of housing (glass, size)
>>*55 gallon glass
>>
>>substrate, if any
>>* Right now i think it is crushed english walnut shells.... bout to switch to sand

***if it is a young/small dragon you may not wuse any substrtae. I use shelfliner and it's great, easy to clean. It sounds like it could be quite possible that your dragon may have ingested some of this substrtae and could be doing internal damage. crushed walnut shells can have very sharp edges. I would just use paper towel or shelf liner for now until you figure out what is going on. Has she pooped? how often? how does it look? color? is the white portion (urates) white or cream colored. How do you provide water?
>>
>>how old are they?
>> I have had them for about a month, got em at a reptile show so dunno.
***how big? Did the seller give you any idea of when they were born?

>>do you have more than one in an enclosure?
>>*Yes, I have 2 sisters in the same tank.
***again, depending on age and size it is best to keep them in separate tanks.

***getting the proper light will help, but you really need to get her to a vet. Whether it is MBD or seizures no one here can diagnose or prescribe. Do you have a local herp vet?
