I have had milksnakes adults who would musk each time you tried to handle them. how are kingsnakes about musking. mainly california kings? Any help would be appreciated.
I will start with a rude comment, if musk is a determining factor on what snakes to keep, then maybe kingsnakes are not for you. If you really like kingsnakes or rattlesnakes(any kind of snake), you would think of musk as perfume. How sweet it is. Ok, natracine snakes can be a little strong, I would only let them musk me on special occasions, like for the oscars or something formal.(laugh here, humor)
Most snakes get over the need to musk you, once they feel safe. To feel safe is directly related to you. If you scare them, you will get musked. So the question again is rude(rude means its your fault), you should not scare them.
Some species are quicker to musk, as are age groups, babies musk, as they are scared by everything. I mean really they are tiny compared to the rest of the world.
Common methods to consider. If you grab a snake, you are inviting a musking. If you let a snake crawl/sit on you, you are not. See what I mean. If you open a cage and imediately grab a snake, your asking again. If you allow the snake to recognize you and scoop it up and not grab it, your not. Good luck and think about whether you really want them.
Consider, theres nothing wrong with not really wanting one. Snakes are not meant for everyone or every kind for those that really like snakes. You sould only keep what you cannot live without, even if it craps on your head. FR
I really enjoy the snakes that I presently have , all seem to be calm and tolerate handling, however, these are pythons and boas. I have a son who wants a snake of his own and I do not want him to get musked when he plans to handle it. I like the appearance of the cal. kings, but if they are more like milks, i probably would go with a corn for him.
If you are just looking for a pet snake for your son then get a king that you can handle before buying to see if it musks. Some adult cal kings calm down and do not musk or are used to being handled by the previous owner. Also the larger florida kings and eastern kings make calmer kingsnakes than the california kings and in my opinion better pets to handle.

The eastern x florida muttly type kings make exceptionally handleable snakes.
Great decision, but it doesn't address the problem of scaring the snakes. All snakes can be scared and stressed by improper handling, whether they musk or not. A good lesson for a youngster would be to learn to handle snakes properly.
I need to ask, whats wrong with a baby boa, I think they are a perfect snake, and when it grows up, it can become part of your colony. Thats a twofer(two birds with one stone, sorta thing). Good luck FR
i have 5 cal kings and only one musks mostly because i rarley have handled her (mainly because i just got her and she burmating). My designer cal king musked me a few times when i got her but it didnt stop me from handleing her and now she can go 4 or 5 weeks without me handleing her and she fine when i pick her up.(the longest ive gone is 3 weeks without handleing her). All the other ones get spooked pretty easily but hey i guess you got to appreciate what you have. So a cal king would be definatly good for a kid. Knowning from experience (i'm 14 and had one when i was 5). So if you get him one and have any questions im sure someone here will be able to answer it.
Your 14 and have 5 snakes? Pretty cool, when I was your age I couldnt have any... Ofcourse thats not including wild caught specimens
Keep it up and you will go far in this hobby.
