~ A cham noob- what's the benifit with CHEESECLOTH flooring ?

clubkidcarlos Nov 27, 2005 04:17 PM

Hi all---
I've seen some cages with a cheescloth type flooring. I have not however, read why this is done.

What's the benifit of this ?
is it worth it ?

I want to design a custom cham cage.. and am curious about implementing the CHEESECLOTH if indeed it has benificial attributes.

thanks all !
carlos

Hi Carlos,

can you say where you have seen this or post a link or photo? Was it in a screen cage? I have never seen this nor can I picture what might resemble it. All but leaf chams spend 99% of their life in trees/plants. Having no substrate is the best way to go, so I cannot imagine why someone would have it. I'll be interested to see if anyone else here has...got me! ;-o

Hey,

Perhaps you saw a cage with a white PLASTIC bottom which looked like CHEESECLOTH. Post a link.

whoops---
I'm wrong LELE.... I was confusing cheese and hardware cloth !?!
I was looking to hard at this pic :

Thinking the bottom was that white cheesecloth. I was thinking, maybe it was being used so no water would pool on the bottom, but would drip through to a resevoir area. That way-- the bottom of cage would dry quicker-- and easy drainage ?!?!?

This is a great site!! Been surfing all kinds of great cham sites non stop in preparation for a new cham. Get my research under the belt, ask some questions and come into this thing with a good start for taking proper care of a veiled cham.

So far so good with snakes chams no dout are more of a challenge !

Hey,

Good thought, but cheese cloth would be weigh to thin, and would wear through after a while. Some people do use hardware cloth on the bottom of the cage for irrigation, but I find it foolish. There shouldn't be that much extra water, unless u r trying to buld up bacteria, lol!!!

I have found that the best bottoms for a cage is a high density pvc. Try to keep as litle plants, vines, ect. near the bottom, as cleaning will be much easier, since you need to do it on a daily basis. If you have any other questions, feel free to email me, or better yet, post them on the forum. But, please do email me, and I will send you a care sheet. Always pleased to meet a fellow cham lover. Have a good day.

Thanks adam for the great advice and explanation. I have several different care sheets bookmarked-- and just about have them memorized !! ugh !! this cham thing is snowballing into a OBSESSION !

I recall the importance of having a floor that is easy to clean, does not pool water, will not harbor areas prone to mold and strong enough to support weight of potted plants.

While you could put some support beams across the underside of a CHEESECLOTH base ( for the potted plants ) I bet your right that it eventually would wear from basic fiber wear. God help you should the crix be free-ranging about the cage ! That cloth would be quick to mimic swiss cheese i'm sure ! ugh.
