Alligators near Memphis

Bryan OKC Nov 27, 2005 05:41 PM

I frequent a Hardy Palm message board where a couple of members insist that there are native alligators in Tennessee (despite the fact that none of the range maps I've ever seen show them there). I have seen a large range extension in Arkansas, due mainly to "restocking" by the state and IMHO, subsequent dispersal. So maybe alligators are there now when there weren't historically?

Here is a televison story about alligators across the state line in nearby MS. It is full of "facts" including the skeleton of a horse killed by an alligator!

I have personally seen A.mississipiensis in the wild in AR, OK, North east TX, Northern LA, and Northern MS.......I have never seen them in TN, but it is within the realm of possibility in the Memphis region...

Where have you seen alligators in Oklahoma? I saw one in forked lake (south of eagletown) several years ago and have spoken with several people who have seen them in sloughs near the conjunction of the mountain fork and little rivers. Please let me know.
thanks

bryan, you, as I am, seem to be interested in the range of the alligator. Regarding your questions there have been 4 or 5 alligators removed from ponds in paragould, arkansas (n.e. ark, greene county) over the past few years. A dead 11 foot alligator was retrieved on the banks of the cache river near egypt (just west of jonesboro)
