HELP! Infected Eye

hamptonsbrad Nov 27, 2005 06:09 PM

Hello to you all - I have an adult leopard Gecko who has the all to familiar shedding problem. About 3 or so months ago she had not fully shed her eyes and now her rignht eye seems to stay shut all the time. I tryed to clean the area with water but due to the sensitive area did not want to fuss to much. Any ideas on how to treat this or what else could have possibly caused it ie: sand in her eyes etc...I take very very good care of her and am very suprised the eye has not opened. Also, I did notice shortly after I first got her that her eye site was very very poor... Any thoughts or suggestions would be very appreciated.. Also, if you have any recommendations on how to imrpove her shed cycle that would help to - she always needs my help around her face when she sheds, is there any lotion or something I could put on her? Oh and if you know what a doctor would prescribe for a Gecko with a closed eye that would help to...

Thanks so much in advance for all of your help!

Brad

Do you have a moist hide for her and keep it moist all the time? If not you definately need to get her one to aid in her shedding. Also, is the eye she keeps closed swollen at all? If you could post a pic that might help someone to give you some advise.

Heck, my big male has been brumating for almost 2 months now, and it's funny cause he rarely opens his right eye. He'll open just a little now & then but basically it stays closed. There is nothing wrong with his eye. If you get him out of his tank he opens it up no problem, it's like he's just too darn lazy right now to open it up LOL

The eye seems to be "Cloudy" inside I just spent about an hour removing the dry skin from her face. I do not have a "full time" moist hide. Not sure how I would go about doing that? If you have some input that would be great. Also, I will try to post a pic tomorrow if I can. The eye is not at all swollen. What concerns me now is the cloudy grey look of the eye, you can not see her pupil it is a grey cloud apperance - do you know if this could be a catarack?

I'm not sure what the problem with the eye is but it sounds like a vet visit is in order. As for making a moist hide it's really cheap & simple. You can use the cheap food containers from Ziploc or Rubbermaid (they come 4 per pack for about $2.00) cut a hole in the side add something like shredded coconut fiber, spaghnum moss, papertoweling etc., and keep it moist. Here is a pic of the front of one I made, and yeah I decorate mine LOL but it gives you an idea on the size (5 cup I believe), that is my adult male looking out LOL:

You can also use stuff you might already have like an empty butter bowl, coolwhip bowl, baby wipes tub etc. Just make sure the container is big enough for your Leo to fit in comfortably
