Wild caught feeder lizards and parasites

nikongirl Nov 27, 2005 06:17 PM

Is anyone feeding w/c lizards (e.g., anoles) and if so, do you do anything to prepare them in case of parasites? I've read that freezing the "food" for 48 hours minimum kills any parasites (external/interal). Of course, that means killing the lizard first, which I'm not comfortable with. What do others who feed w/c lizards do? Thank you.

It is recommended that w/c feeders of any type be given a hard freeze for at least 3 to 4 weeks prior to use. This will kill almost all single and multi-cellular parasites and their eggs.

Thank you, Kelly. So, would you put the live lizard right into the freezer (in a ziplok or something)? Seems mean to do that, but I supposed it would just kind of go to sleep with the cold, then eventually die. This is the part I'm not sure about or comfortable with. Comments?

Some people put them in the refrigerator for an hour or so to cool them into dormancy first before going to the freezer. I think this would probably be the best way. Just my opinion on it. Thanks,

Kelly

I hadn't thought of that. Thanks again.
