New cages - almost done - check it out !...

Antegy Nov 27, 2005 07:18 PM

Hi everyone,

I've been working all weekend to set up the new cages I got. I have them arranged all on one stacked rack unit - five cages in all. Its been a lot of work, and I'm almost done (just need to add hide boxes, etc., and re-setup the misting system).

A year and one day ago my setup looked like this:

It had one six foot Vision cage for my burm, two small vision cages for my king and milk snakes, and a four foot cage for my boa (and a hex tank setup for my ratsnake off on its own).

Today, I moved my boa into the six foot Vision cage, and moved my king, milk, and rat snakes into new three foot cages, while my burm got a full eight foot cage (all of the cages are three feet deep!).

Here's the new setup:

I'm going to box off the space on either side of the middle cage and install cabinet doors to give myself a little bit of storage space for miscellaneous little things. And while I thought that it might not be a good idea to have my burm on the top rack (which is at about shoulder level to me), it is actually a comfortable height for me, and works very well for viewing. The only real problem with this cage setup is that it is so long that it takes up most of the length of that wall in the room (the room they are in is pretty small). So, I can't open the door all the way to get in and out of the room (the door is on the left in the picture) - but I knew that going in to this, so I'm ok with it. I could have move the setup somewhere else, but after I took into consideration a few things it turned out to be best there (ie, window light, proximity to heaters and other doors, etc.).

My burm's new cage seems so huge, he almost looks like a little kid again in it (he's over twelve feet though)...

In addition to everyone getting much larger cages, they all now have full spectrum lighting too. I haven't seen much of any difference in my burm's behavior, but at least one of my other snakes (my milksnake) seems to appreciate it very, very much. Also, the new radiant heat panel I got and installed in my burm's cage is working great.

Let me know what you think!

Thanks,
- Mark

Dang son, you been busy!! It looks great Mark. The burm does look like he shrank a bit though, doesn't he? . At least now you shouldn't have to upgrade tank sizes anymore.

Just wanted to show how the new setup looks from a little further away...

I know it looks like I can't get through the door (on the left - the one on the right is just a closet), but it actually does open up to about half way - so I can get in and out, no problem.

Oh - my webcam is on the tripod. I have it extended to it's fullest height now, since my burm is up top, and I usually have the webcam on him (I run the webcam 24/7 on my site).

The sheet of wood standing up against the wall on the right is what I'm going to cut down for making the cabinets in the empty spaces in the middle section of the racks.

In the foreground is the couch on the left and the coffee table in the middle. I was standing on the table as far back as I could get (right up against the windows) to get this shot. It looks like the table has gunk on it in the picture, but its just water (from when I layed out some fake plants to dry just after I washed them - which I use in the smaller cages).

This is the same room, one year ago:

(notice the camouflage material hanging on the wall on the right... - its now the material covering the frame of the new setup!).

Here's the frame before wrapping with the material:

Thanks,
- Mark

Hey Kevin,

You have 36 pythons and boas?! I can't even imagine what your place is like. Anyway, I got that 8' cage from cagesbydesing.com. I actually got four of those five cages all at once (the three 3' cages on the bottom, and the 8' cage on top). I guess I just wanted it all to look nice and coordinated in the final setup.
