Nice work Will ! I think when I do my custom cage -- my 100 difficult steps will include such key words as : " LOTS OF BEER" " BANDAIDS FOR THE CUT FINGER"..."FREAKING ^$%$##"..."WELL IT LOOKED ALLOT BETTER ON PAPER ?!!? "

chadosborne Nov 28, 2005 08:00 AM

what is that green hex wire stuff.

where'd you get it?

Willhayward Nov 28, 2005 08:13 AM

The Green Hex wire is just Plastic Link Fencing. Its used as an alternative to Chain link fencing usually for temporary boundaries at construction sites, or when renovating a yard, making outdoor dog pens, or similar applications.

Its about the same size in links as your average chain link fence only its all one peice molded together. Its strong, smooth, has a great diameter. it bend and is plyable but when in tension it is hard and taut.

You can find large rolls or lengths of it at Hardware stores, possibly landscaping companies. I'm not sure what stores in the US would carry it, but look in Home Depot, Home Hardware, Lowes, Reno and similar places.

I've never seen that stuff. Great idea for an interior climbing grid to keep cham feet off the fine screen! Good idea.

WillHayward Nov 28, 2005 12:46 PM

I used to have a dog fence up around the stone part of my backyard. We took it down because it didn't work too well... big dog. So for the last 4 years it has been rolled up outside collecting dirt.

I haven't seen the jerk use it, but I think he has bassed on where I saw him this morning. Hes only been in the cage 16 hours now.

Hopefully on thursday two more will be don just like this. Only, female size.

If you happen to allow the chameleon to hunt bugs, instead of bowl feeding, how do you keep the bugs from getting out?

Cage looks awesome

Even the chameleon could squeese through those holes in the plastic link fence, forget the bugs!

As you can see below there is two sheets of Weed Blocker stretched one ince away, on the outside of the frame, whereas the links are mounted on the inside. The 1" in between them allows for their feet to grab without the sheets getting in the way.

The weed blocker is a soft, but durable fabric whit has tiny tiny holes punchured in it evry 2 milimeters. There are two sheets together. It makes everything look like black blobs and a hard sray of water at close range BARLEY mists through. Now the misters won't mold my walls.

I have never seen this except on this site, but I wonder if it is sturdier than the fencing you use. Also not sure if it is worth the expense - just figured I'd show you...

-----

lele Nov 28, 2005 06:44 PM

I was showing a different type of plastic mesh (on site that I linked to in previous post) called Plastic Hardware Cloth as an alternative to what you used. Wondering if it might be sturdier due to smaller mesh and is referred to as heavy duty. Here is the pic and link

That mesh only allows the chameleon to grip with its toes, where mine lets the hole foot grab it. I don't see a problem, since I also have the black garden cloth as enclosure walls... nothing is going to escape this thing.

Although I have a feeling that I am not understanding what you are saying.
-----

lele Nov 28, 2005 11:10 PM

Will - i was simply showing another possible product for a gripping surface inside the cage - that's all. I was not saying that you, or anyone, should necessarily use it - just an option. Also, I do not know if it would be too pricey (the hd'we cloth) thereforemaybe not a good option. I get your point about the size of the opening re: toes vs. foot, but I also know that some people like to use the metal hd'we cloth which can cut.

Anyway....just a simple little post that got very confusing!

Hey guys,

I am not sure if this was already said, but the plastic fencing can be found in 4'x50' rolls at almost any major home improvement store. Home depot, and Lowes I knwo for sure have it. I am surprised that you guys have only seen that on this site. I have had it in some of my cages in the past, along with many other breeders. I see it in many of Screameleons and Chamco's pics(where I got the idea). I do not use it anymore, because of the size of my new cages. It was very hard to fit it in, and it was very hard to work with(in my situation). If you guys are thinking of using it, BE SURE to staple it onto the panel BEFORE you connect the panel onto the cage. I built all of the frames first and then tryed to staple it in, and I could not fit the staple gun where it had to go (not that this will probably happen to you). So after an hour and a half and 100 misquito bites later, and only having one cage done, I gave up!!! Good luck with whoever is going to try it. I am sure that in MOST cases it is easy to work with....

Also, another reason I don't use it is because I have never had a need for it. I have had it in the past, but I didn't see a need to have it. I have never had a chameleon loose any nails, and they climb on the cage sides all the time. Just my experience....

Adam.

is it just plastic or is there a wire inside?

how much is a roll?

WillHayward Nov 29, 2005 02:13 PM

There is no wire inside, but it is REALLY dense. It does not fold and give lots of resistance and strength under tension. Since it is all one peice, the weight put on it, is spread out to the entire peice by the crossing links.

Comes in large bundles or you can get a certain length seperated for you. Prices vary on size and quality.

I checked 2 diff Lowes an no green hex wire.

there's an ag supply not too far. I'll check there this weekend.

the closest home depot is and hour away

WillHayward Nov 30, 2005 01:54 PM

Give their customer service a call.

If they don't sound sure of what you are talking about, ask for someone else and try to describe it. "Wire" might throw them off, because there is no actual "wire" inside the plastic.

jusmebabe Nov 28, 2005 06:31 PM

Make things look so easy. I go out blow 100.00 on wood, screen, screws and then make a cage that I wouldn't sell to my worst enemy lol..
By the way cages look exactly what I want and try to build with no luck.. My mom keeps saying I should've paid attention in wood class (hate when she's right).
I guess I'll go back to looking at your pics and figure out how to blow more money..
Great job on those cages..

0.0.42 Ambilobe Panther Chameleons

WillHayward Nov 28, 2005 06:39 PM

I have a solution for you... Send me all 42 of those Ambilobes. Then you won't even need cages. And... I'm not even kidding.

By the way. This cage isn't put together well at all. The wood is warped. The cuts are croked. The staples crimped.

Why do you think all the photos are from far away? :D

On this cage I spent about $90 CANADIAN.
