Best cage to keep a Venomous snake?

ericR Nov 27, 2005 09:54 PM

HI,
My friend is giving me a sidewinder (rattlesnake) and I would like to know the most secure cage to buy. I am thinking about an old Neodesha. Thanks for your help, ericR

Habitat Systems (do a search for that name.) Best venemous cages sold commercially, but very pricey. Aside from that, there are lots of cages that are escape proof. It is really up to you to be safe. You can have the best cage in the world and still get bitten or leave the cage door open accidentally.

Here are some less expensive options:

Get some tongs. I've kept 'winders. Although rather small and often mellow, when they are agitated or warmed up they can strike very fast.

I find the best option is to make your own.
It can be tailor made to the specifications you require. You can use higher quality, safe materials, that wont cost you through the roof. Also, you will know the enclosure like the back of your hand (afterall... you designed it). Many enclosures available on the us market contain their own flaws (hidden lips, gaps, etc).

Cheers,
Aaron.

The material doesn't matter. Wood steel or glass are fine. I use wood (rip) cages. What matters is that the top is high enough to be out of reach and if it isn't then double screened(with an inch between layers). A lock is a very good idea.

Sand is best for the bottom. Aside from that some sidewinders have a problem with water. I have two and one (a Mojave)has never touched water, the other ( a Sonoran) gets only limited amounts (once a week).
