Live or frozen mice?

shion Nov 27, 2005 10:16 PM

What do you feed yours? What are the pros and cons of each?

I feed my snakes frozen/thawed rodents. You can also feed pre-killed rodents to your snakes, and live rodents should probably only be offered if your snake will not take f/t or pre-killed. Its really a matter of preference, as I know some people who only feed live. However, when feeding live it is very important that you watch the snake because a hungry or frightened mouse/rat can and will bite your snake, and i have seen some pretty nasty pictures of rodent bites on snakes. If your snake doesnt immediately go after the mouse, it is a good idea to leave some food in the cage for the mouse so that it has another option other than your snake. That being said, imho if you can get your snake to eat frozen or pre-killed rodents, you should probably go with them, or attempt to convert them over. To me the risk, even if its a slight one, that your snake will be hurt if you feed it live is reason enough not to feed live unless your snake absolutely refuses to eat frozen or pre-killed. Hope this helps some.

I fed live mice to mine because they were available. I always watched the snake closely, and would pre-kill any rodents that were aggressive (happened twice).

I switched to frozen once I started feeding rats. Again, for me the choice is based on my needs more than the snake. If you feed live, watch your snake to make sure it eats. I have no problems with either.
