Substrate issues!!!!!!!!

jkins Nov 28, 2005 10:30 AM

Ok, at first i used carefresh bedding and loved it. Then costs were getting a little high so I switched to newspaper, which sucked. Then after some reading and research everyone seems to have great luck with apen bedding. Well it has been a few months of using it and I am not happy with it. Its dusty and does not dry out when wet. Do others have issues with this or am I doing somthing wrong with it? I guess I am just trying to get some support to make me switch back to carefresh.

Does anyone know where to get cheap carefresh bedding???

Thanks all and feel free to give suggestions.

Josh

10 years and I've never had a problem with aspen.... Carefresh isn't cheap because it absorbs 3x more than any wood shaving so your going to have to pay for that. Switch to cypress mulch if you don't mind that the humidity in the tank will be higher. Or stay with news paper

I don't know about large quantities, but Wal-Mart sells a carefresh equivalent that is considerably cheaper at the smaller sized bags they sell. I would check a wholesale farm/pet food/supply warehouse type operation in your area to get really big bags.

I have tried the 3 you did, and I like newprint for my "Drys", I like CareFresh and Aspen for others. Perhaps mixing CareFresh with Aspen would work out? Some complain that CareFresh is too drying, also too expensive. Aspen is great because it hold "burrow" shape and is attractive etc. I buy CareFresh through a wholesale arrangement where our herp club buys several pallets at a time, which works out for all involved (but is still not cheap...)

From what I've noticed, the generic Walmart brand isn't as nice as some of the more expensive pet store brands. It's dustier and has smaller chips as opposed to being light and fluffy.
