HELP!!!!! Caging Question

thegeckolady Jul 23, 2003 09:55 AM

I just built a wooden cage for my dragon's. I wanted to know what to seal the wood with on the interior. I was worried that varnish, shallack or deck sealent would cause fumes, when heated from the lights.

Any help would be appreicated!

Thanks!
J.C.

Thanks for the reply. I made a cage out of plywood. I want to use sand as a substrate. But I figured the wood could get wet if they spill their water. I just want to seal the wood to prevent it from getting wet or harboring bacteria. I just need to know what sealants wont harm the animals.

Thanks!

I used a scrap piece of linoleum sealed to the bottom w/silicone. I left it an inch to big on all sides too. I used poly on the stain, but don't know how it reacts to heat (using the cage for a crested gecko). I put background to cover the stained/polyed wood in the back and sides. I plan on using thin plexi to cover the background (sealed w/silicone), making it easier to clean. I am using the same cage plans to make for my beardies (different deminsions though), but will research how the poly reacts to the heat first. Might just skip staining and poly inside and go w/the background and plexi. Sorry for rambling. Hope I helped give you some ideas.

Later gator!

Thanks! She is a sweetie. She licks everything and never wants to be in her cage.

Thanks again.
