The Co-Dom. Dilemma

zefdin Nov 28, 2005 03:27 PM

With the VERY precipitous drop in prices of recently introduced dominant and co-dominant morphs, it seems to put both the top tier producers and secondary buyers in interesting spots.

In the future, the top tier producer would seem to want to hold back and aquire as many of these "new" animals as possible, thus maximizing his/her financial punch when the morph is finally released and prices are (hopefully for them) higher.

This strategy is interesting in the fact, that, it will be noteworthy to see if people are still willing to shell out big bucks with the foreknowledge of how quickly prices have fallen in the recent past.

The second tier may just say I am going to be patient and wait for the price to drop.

This would leave the top tier in an interesting box.

Well, not really. The next new co-dom thing gets released for some big loot and few buy it. The breeder holds onto it works it into their other projects and looks to sell the more common mutations to pay the bills knowing they are only getting more out of the new Co-Dom. At some point they have made some Co-Doms that they can sell and have some combos and they now can drop the price to a price that sells and they do well. They leave out the first round of middle men and accomplish more for themselves in the long run.

I don't think you could call that a box.

But who am I, just a janitor and rat cleaner!

With manageable risks and a workable time frame.

I like it!

I agree...makes sense to me. I wonder, though...if a really neat morph like an all blue animal (not just a BP) comes around, or a really neat pattern, like one that spells out NERD on it's side, lol would make the lesser morphs drop faster in price. There are only so many buyers, and the higher dollar the item, the fewer buyers will be able to purchase. That's not just in reptiles, it works for cars and many other items. Each extra hundred or so make someone drop out.

Your absolutely right, but think about the smaller number of cars that were being produced and sold 40 or 50 years ago compared to today(let alone the amount of money in the used car market...today,and the last 40-50 years past). Those of you that have been around for more than 3 to 5 decades can attest to this....there is simply MORE traffic.

Now,a car is one of the big three(food/shelter/transportation),this is true. However with population growth(along with the growing public awareness),and the vibrance of the animals themselves...The amount of pet reptiles will(in all probability)be increasing per home annually.

So yeah...they will all drop...but no one is giving away "used cars".

(Unless it is a tax write-off,because they sold to many morphs last year.)

Now that i have babbled a bit...your point finally hits me.
We could end up the same as the car market... with a "big three" only? (Remember the Tucker story? lol).

...yeah...i was bored...and if you made it to here then i have managed to wasted a few minutes of your time too

Yep...any commodity, you lose buyers on the same item when the price is raised, assuming it's identical, which is controlled by who is the breeder. The "Big Boys" will always be able to get more money than the smaller breeders for the same animal...and they should.

Think they'll be some xbox 360s sold for over list?

Anyone old enough to remember "fair trade" laws?
