Need info on Albinos

Reptile-fanatic Nov 28, 2005 08:04 PM

I'm very excited.
I've been planning on picking up a new Albino leopard gecko. I've already had 4 normal females and one male, but I have never breed. I've been checking out the ones at my local petshop and they are in great health. I have a 20 gallon tank, and I will be buying her three hide-outs, a water dish and a feeding dish. Also an undertank heater. I've looked all over the place and i can't seem to find any info on caring for albino leopard geckos. I'll be keeping her on newspaper for the sake of her digestion, and will be feeding her a variety of bugs. But my biggest problem is bulbs. As she is ablino, i fear if i give her the same wattage i'm giving my five adults, she might get hurt because of it. I hear they have fairly sensitize eyes. I've found blue bulbs that are supposed to mimic the moons lighting, would that be sufficient?

Basic care of a albino leo is no different than the normal ones exsept they are more sensitive to light. But no leo is a big fan of light anyway there nocturnal. If your going to use a bulb use a red buld that has red glass not a painted red one reptile can't see red so will do nothing to there eyes.

THanks for the help. It feels good to finally have an answer to my worries. Its kinda weird, i used to use red lights, but my geckos seem to love daylight hours and to bask in the light of the cages next to them.

Ihave to agree about the light loving albinos.

The albino i have had for 4 days now, she is just a juvi, but she has seemed to love the light.

for most of yesterday she just laid out in one corner near the humid hide in teh light and slept all day. I do'nt get it.

Good luck with your albino I hope he/she lives a long time and congrats on yoru new little one.

But... if you use a red light the gecko wont know its daytime. You can just have a light on near the tank. It doesnt have to be a heat source. I have one tank that has a light and the tank next to it doesnt, because the gecko hides all day anyways, so when I turn on the light both cages of geckos think its day and its time to sleep.

I don't have any albinos, and I don't use lighting for a heat source, so, I use standard 15 watt household bulbs. They are cheap and give sufficient light without being too bright. I use them on all my tanks which range from 15 gal to 29 gal. I use to use 40 & 25 watt bulbs but, seems almost all my leos started coming out earlier in the day/evening once I went with the smaller bulb. I do have red bulbs (50 watt) for nighttime viewing & additional heat during the cold weather when needed.

EKeve or however your name goes, i think if the gecko just sat under the light all day her tank is probbly not warm enough.
just my opinion.

>>They can't see the red so they can tell day from night they would see as normal as if the red light was turned off.
