Exo-Terra natural sand

Reptile-fanatic Nov 28, 2005 09:48 PM

Is anyone familiar with this sand? I've heard alot of praise for it and its small grains and how natural it is supposed to be. Has anyone got any experiance with this and using it for leopard geckos?

They live in a sandy desert, true, but they stay in and on rocks and rock crevaces.

I wouldn't use sand with a leopard gecko, because they are vorocious eaters, and they are likely to ingest heavy amounts of sand. I am just using shelf-liner right now, but in the spring I hope to find some flat rocks and slate, and then I'm considering filling the bottom of the enclosure with dirt, and covering most of it with rocks, this way The enclosure will be dry, but the hidespots (which will have dirt under them) will be really moist, allowing for good sheds and hydration.

One thing most people forget about desert reptiles is that they really can't live in low humidity. They usually have ways of getting to high humidity by burrowing or getting underneath/inside of things that offer higher humidity. Otherwise, if the enclosure is nothing but dry, you will run into problems like improper shedding and impactions due to low body hydration.

Besides, if you are going to go with sand, pet-store sand is a waste of money. It's really no different for the animal than regular silica free playsand (which I have used in the past with a bearded dragon....and hated! Sand is just so dusty and dry).

I've found many leopard geckos on sand in the wild. I've observed and photographed them, but i didn't collect them. I keep my leopards on sand, and i feed them in a seperate box, works and looks great. What i was asking was if someone had any experiance with this sand.
