My best advice is to buy cb or buy from someone you KNOW that has long term captives. Stay away from the new imports unless you have a lot of experience with acclimating wc as the nigerians seem to have a very high mortality rate. I love the reds, they are beautiful and wish you luck on finding yourself a nice pair. Post pics when you get them.

i don't think people are ignoring your post, i just don't think many people have nigers, or maybe they do and i just cannot think of them right now. but from what i gather of nigers, pam pretty much summed up the tips when she said get a captive bred or a long term import. it will be healthy that way and you can have fun taming it and getting to know it.

breeders recommended on the internet are deerfernfarms.com and urotopia.com. there is another person too but i cannot think of the name right now, something to do with andrea or audry

Nigers can be hard to keep.Sofar I havent had to much trouble with mine. They are generally skittish though some people have said that theres are rather tame.CB's might be a little calmer.Doug Dix told me that they try not to get any imports this time of year as they dont hold up as well. They should have some in around mid Feb/March.

oh, i never thought that i was being ignored. its just that i am going to the show tomorrow(yay!! )and i am having a hard time finding any accurate info on them.i have been to deerfernfarms and urotopia and read their caresheets and i have had uros before, about 2-3 years ago. i was just trying to find any last details i could. oh, and i know about wild caughts, last show i was at i bought a ball python that was supposedly "captive bred and eating great" the next day i am picking ticks off of him and he didnt eat for 6 months... but hes better now soo... anyway, i wont buy wild caught... it just seems senseless. but, im rambling so, i hope to see you all tomorrow. thanks for all the help.

If that's a brick in his cage, I'd be careful of long term problems with lead poisoning. Any cement, motar, concrete, glazed/fired type items are suspect to this. I lost a mali due to this because a cinder block that was in her cage for a few years.

Not to worry you, just would feel bad if I didn't say anything.

Jim,

I have seen you post several times on the issuing of losing a mali due to lead poisoning from a cinder block. I have been meaning to ask you about this but did not get around to it until now.

How high was the level of lead in the blood analysis of your mali?

Jimbo Dec 08, 2005 12:53 PM

Man, I wish I remembered.

Though I bring it up whenever I see it may be appropriate, I don't know that it happens all that often. It was just as innocent as seeing some cinder block pieces that looked neat and she loved to climb on and through. Since I now just go with safe things, I haven't done any research on the subject since she died.

"Man, I wish I remembered."

Jimbo,

Your vet should have a copy of the lab report in their file.

If you would be willing to contact the vet who drew the blood, I would be very interested in obtaining this data. I would be interested not only in the blood lead level, but also the results of a chemistry panel if one was run. I am more than happy to pay for any fees involved if the vet clinic or lab should have a fee for photo copying or faxing the report.

If you do acquire this data, I would like to pick your brain a little (via email) with some additional questions.

Thanks for your consideration in this matter.

I'll see what I can do. I no longer live in the area so I'd have to try and plan something out when i get over that way again. If I can get some info, I'll definately let you know.

just curious how was the hamburg show, I ask because I have been killing myself trying to find nice nigers, and was at the last show. There was supposed to be a vendor called superpet outlet there---they claim to be big uromasts- was wondering if they had any quality animals, they're not far from me --NJ. Fortunately my quest ended Fri night when i hopefully finalized the group. I know what you're going through its really tough.
