Have any pet in the whole world, and have the perfect set up, food source, vet,ect.ect.... what would it be and why?

I think I would have a crocodile. A big one! I watched a special on them and they are so cool. I would even pick one over a Tiger!! I would like to watch one hatch from an egg and grow and grow!

p.s. I had the dream again last night about the cage full of Chameleons, that I had forgotten about. Weird huh?

Past or present? Do extinct animals count?
If I could have an extinct pet, I think I'd like Argentavis magnificens or Phorusrhacos longissimus. I think it'd be one helluva thing to have as a mount (flyer or runner, as in a horse).
If you're going to restrict me to LIVING pets, then I'll have to settle for a Galapagos tortoise. Either that or my kids.

Probably a Harpy Eagle. Although I am alergic to fur and feathers. So not having alergies would have to be one of the conditions.

If I had to have something that would not affect my alergies I would have a Three Toed Sloth.

I'll have to find a photo I took of both of these animals, while traveling in the Brazilian Amazon.

For me, it would have to be either a mimic octopus or a Lyrebird. They are the birds that mimic other birds calls, and have even been known to mimic chainsaws( from deforestation) cameras, etc. It sounds almost identical too I dont know how they do it. I just think it would be funny for it to mimic back the b*tching I have to go thru sometimes from my girlfriend, and for it to be her voice.

That would roam free on my (Imaginary land) LOL and only come to me, when I called his name, we could romp, and play.

I could watch him run, and find him so Magestic and Enchanting as his wild mane blows in the wind, of course as the sun is going down.

Oh I would take some pics for ya all too, hehehehehe !

He would look maybe something like this pic below, but I find many colors Breath taking!

I believe you. Twelve years ago my son gave me an Iguana for christmas. I didn't know how to take care of her and the information that I got (from a vet no less) was horrible. "Feed her crickets, fruit cocktail and iceberg lettuce." I struggled to learn what I could about her but most of the info I got was wrong and she got MBD. The internet just wasn't that good back then. I finally got some good information when she was about nine months old and she started on her road to recovery. I got rid of the damn hot rock and got her under the tank heaters and UVB lights. She had the proper heat and lighting for the first time in her life but her tail and her back we're broken in four places. When she was two she developed infertile eggs. Because of skeletal deformities she wasn't going to be able to lay them. She had a three hour surgery and my new vet, (bless her) removed thirty eggs. Koko had another lease on life again. Four years later, when she was about 5 feet long Koko swung her tail and hit a fence post. She got a compound fracture, her tail became infected and had to be amputated. Koko had really been through a lot now but when she is out of her cage now she comes and crawls under my feet and goes to sleep. She is 12 now and beginning to slow down. I don't know what I'm going to do when she dies. If I could have any animal, it would be Koko, for at least another 10 years. Sorry this was so long. Valerie.

lele Nov 29, 2005 06:01 PM

She was very lucky to be in your care - not someone who would give up when the vet bills got too high

I always liked dragons (mythical) as a kid and I think that iguanas are about the closest to one. I know they can be very demanding due to size, feeding, etc. This is why I will wait. I almost got my mom to agree to one when I was a kid, but thank goodness she did not! The poor thing probably would have gone the way of my anoles and desert iguana - due to bad pet store info; I'm talking the 60's so the internet simply did not exist. It's sad that so many pet stores STILL give out poor info.

Well, give Koko a scratch on her head from me. Have you come across this site/story of rescue?

That's cool that she lived this long! I saw a BIG boy up for adoption here on KS, his name was Petey, he was Awesome!! I would love to have an Iggy as well, but the Fiance has put a stop to my collection. Something to do with Crickets escaping, and chirping in the bedroom all night!

Has anyone seen the special on Super Croc? Now that is close to a real size dragon! He was beautiful! I had no idea the baby crocs can "bark". They make this wierd little noise when scared, and they are so darn cute when they hunt grasshopers! And when the males are looking for a mate, they do this cool water shimmy that looks like they are bubble machines!

I had not seen that Iguana rescue story, thank you for sharing Lele. I think my vet could probably retire tomorrow with all the money we have given her for Koko, our Chameleons and Geckos. Thank god she hasn't! She has been wonderful.

It's good in a world with so many unwanted Iguanas that some people we're created to be owners of one. I was one of those people and I never would have known it if someone hadn't given me an Iguana. If you have wanted one most of your life, I think that you might also be one of those people. You should consider getting one. I've never said that to anyone before now. I don't recommend Iguanas as pets because they require a lot of care. I know with the animals you have and have had in the past that you are a good candidate. There is not very many people that are good fits for Iguana ownership.

The cage is probably going to be your biggest obstacle. The one Koko has was previously used by a 20' Python. She still had her tail when she first moved into it. Now that she is only 22" long, it sorta dwarfs her but she likes it okay. Thanks, Lele, let me know what you think. Valerie.

lele Nov 30, 2005 10:00 AM

Thanks a lot for saying that, Valerie!

I would consider adopting one over getting a baby. Not that I would not love to have one grow up with me, but I am painfully aware of the orphaned igs. Unfortunately, where I live right now is temporary (OK, it's been 7 years but it was b/c I returned to school in my old age - lol!) and the space is just not doable. As it is, Darwin is in his 75gal tank in my bedroom! And when/if (I'll go with when) I get another cham the cage will take up the space I have in the office, which is where Luna was. I have a large bedroom. Ideally, I would love to dedicate an entire room to one so it can free range. Once I figure out where I am going to end up and buy a home again I will get one. Unfortunately, I am sure there will still be many adoptees available.

Lele, you may be older than most of the people that get on this forum, but you don't know what old is yet. If I had it to do over that would be what I would change, I would have adopted. If you do adopt some day, go with a female. Iguanas really have some formidable defenses and the males make them offensive weapons during the mating season. A large male can seriously hurt you. Valerie.

Hi,

I would definetly have to pick an orangortange(LOL, I don't even know how to spell it though!!!). I have always been very fascinated with them. Either that, or believe it or not, a parson's chameleon.

I would have to go with either a Kinkachoo (spelling?) or my MOST FAVORITE animal in creation, A flying Fox! They're just absolutly gorgeous, and so friendly! Just an awesome animal to even be around!

It would be cool to be able to have all our "pets"!! but for now, I guess we can dream!!
