Free-Range Tegu's?

Tugi Nov 29, 2005 04:27 PM

I was wondering if anyone out there keeps their tegus cageless. My two argentines, Inigo and Lily, are always wanting to come out of their cage. I was thinking about letting them run loose in my room during the day. They would have the cage door open so they could have fresh water and basking and hiding spots. Has anyone else done this? What would I need to consider when it comes to lizard proofing? The whole room is always about 80 so they wouldn't get cold. I was just wondering if anyone has lizards cageless.

80 degrees for the room temperature is great. And as you said, they would have access to the cages at all times.

The thing I would be very concerned about is the floor, and keeping it sanitized. What's on the floor? If it's hard wood the feces and urine will stick to it and soak into it. And forget about it if there's a carpet! Nasty!

You'd have to inspect the floor daily and be meticulous about cleaning and disinfecting it every day.

Other than that, the less stuff that's on the floor the better. Keep all wires off the floor so the tegus can't drag them and pull down phones, lamps, radios, etc. Use caution every time you open the door, and make sure others do the same are aware of what they might find if the enter the room. Better yet, keep the door locked when you're not around. Make sure there are no spaces a tegu can cram itself into or escape through.

Yes, my main concern would be the floor.

The person who I bought my enclosure from let their redxblue hybrid have access to the tiled floor kitchen during the day and it would sleep in its vision cage during the night. I noticed they had a basking lamp hanging on the wall with a piece of slate under it. You would want to create a basking spot for them but maybe they will go back into the cage to bask. Good luck I have no first hand experience with it but thats what I saw and she kinda told me thats what she did.
