a few questions before i purchase my first leopard gecko

metal_pitbu11 Nov 29, 2005 08:45 PM

I'm going to look at a leopard gecko i found in the paper...dont worry, ive talked to the woman and she really seems to know her stuff...i know basics on lizards and she knew quite a bit, apparently had a reptile store. but ne way, i have a few questions about the species.

1. temp. gradient? night and day?

2. do they need crickets, or can i feed them entirely on worms?(seems easier since worms can be put in a dish.)

3. what should i look for if there was something wrong with the lizard?

4. i have a zoo med 10 gal. heat pad...too hot? if it is too hot, would a layer of substrate other than paper towels help this? ( im planning on using paper towels.)

thanks a million, and hopefully within the next couple days, i will have my first lizard.

Your substrate surface on the warm end should be 90 to 92 degrees. The cool end air temp can be about 75 degrees. Look for a good thick tail and make sure she has been eating.

Also, you can feed on mealworms (I prefer crickets)and you don't need a night temp drop. Use a good digital thermometer with probe and a thermostat to regulate and moderate temps at the warm end.
