ok seriously guys yea i know im young and all but SERIOUSLY ALL I HEAR IS ARGUING!!! ok some people are worried to death here about something beeing wrong with thier snakes and im the only one to respond to it after it beeing up all day! All i hear is arguing and trying to prove people wrong and all that crap. some posts have gone on with 20 or 30 replies and more than half dont even have to do with the subject they are random posts or ARGUING! These forums are made for talking about king snakes learning about them and helping others with them. There are plenty of other ones out there were you can argue but why in here?!? almost every post in hear has arguing in it! One about canabalism. Someone poped up and said cannabalism can only be called canabalism if it happend with their own spieise (spelling sorry) snakes eating snakes is canabalism anyway you put it! lets say and american ate a asian person (not trying to be racist) they are from different races (speices) but they are still human CANABALISM. I had one were some guy got on my case when i said my snake wont hybernate and they said i was wrong because its supposed to be called burmateing. So lets keep the replies simple if we know whant they mean so we dont get into these HUGE arguments about who knows what. and help others and talk about kingsnakes! i know people are going to get on my case for this but im willing to let that happen because i want to see some kingsnake talking going around here and less arguing.

People argue on these forums and use technical terms for people to learn.... You can't learn by agreeing with everything you see/hear because that would just be boring. The arguments are perfectly fine (as you can see they havn't been deleted). And also a race is (atleast In human terms) is not a species but your origin.... but we are infact 1 big species thats why we call ourselves the human race... If a person from american ate a person from asia he's a cannibal because he ate someone from his own species. Don't you have school tomorrow?

fighterpilot Nov 29, 2005 09:57 PM

yea i have school tomarrow and i did today but what the heck dose that have to do with anything? and i know people have made posts about arguing and know one really looks down on them. and i hate halo 2. But im just saying we consider ourselves humans and we consider snakes snakes. so if a snake ate a snake that would be kinda like a person eating a person(even though that is kinda gross on the human side). im just saing we should help out the people that need help with thier kings. And were did halo2 come from? I am a pilot like a plane flying one like cessna's.

I agree with you that the tenor of these forums can intimidate people who want help. I applaud you for making the point.
Now, first off, here is the correct spelling of "cannibalism." Second, using Dictionary.com, the definition is , "An animal that feeds on others of its own kind." I agree that the definition fits your example. What HKM's is telling you that Ophiophagy is a specific type of cannibalism.
Finally, do what I do. If you don't feel like participating in an online debate, just read and think. You can learn a lot here. Somtimes you won't agree with the poster and that's fine. Frankly, you should never assume that any of us are always correct. As often as not, the poster is telling you what they believe based on their experience. We rarely have the luxury or resources to prove our points beyond any doubt. That's what makes this fun and fascinating.
Take care, pal.

I don't mean to argue, but a snake that eats other snakes is considered ophiophagous. Ophiophagy means snake eating.

thanks...well thats not arguing thanks for the info apreciate it.

I think I was the "some guy" when you referred to the hibernation thing.

Yeah, I was completely splitting hairs on that one. Actually, after I posted that response, I wanted to withdraw, but too late. Bad post by me. Point is though, technically it was more correct than not correct by definition, and it was certainly not a condemnation of you or anyone else. It is one guy's opinion based on experience. Which is what these forums are about.

You see arguing. I see great ideas and observations even if some may differ from my own opinions. Or yours.

Who says this forum has to be a place where we all agree on everything and can't put out ideas and assumptions? Would you really want that?

Namecalling is one thing. But debating ideas is a good thing.

Plus, they are words on a forum. Don't take it personally.

I know I'm just a newbie here, but so far I've liked this forum. I'm a big fan of debating (not arguing, the constructive kind of debating) because it's a great way to learn, whether you're part of it or just an observer. Also, arguments or not, from what I've seen people have kept on the topic at hand, which is snakes in this case. That alone is a very good thing about any forum. It's really annoying when you are on, for example, a car forum and people start talking about pygme goats (I have seen this happen). So I say kudos to everyone for keeping a good forum that I have already learned a lot from.

I think the arguments are great! They are a great learning tool and whether one agrees with one side or the other or has a different opinion all their own, it makes one THINK!

BTW, a kingsnake eating a rattlesnake or a gopher snake is not canniblism. Just because all snakes have scales and lack legs does not make them the same species. Wolves and deer are both mammals, have four legs and fur. But a wolf eating a deer is not canniblism. Nor is a human consuming a cow canniblism. A Cal- king eating a gophersnake or a rattlesnake is no different than a wolf eating a deer or a rabbit. Various snake species are as different to each other as are different mammal species. Now a Cal-king eating a Cal-king is indeed cannabalism.
