Corns and Gophers

jasonw Nov 29, 2005 11:26 PM

Ok please bear with me; I am not as moronic as I seem from time to time. I got to thinking today about this. An associate of mine dose not see anything special about my Corns. I ask him how can you not. Look at them? He says all they are are glorified Gopher Snakes just more colorful and from a different part of the country. I disagree but tonight got to looking at them and my Pacific Gopher Snake and realized he is almost correct. I still think they are special but They do have the same patterns as my Gopher, just more brilliant colors. I got to thinking what one would come up with if anything if they bread something like a corn with a gopher? Hmmmmmmmmmmm More than likely would not work but I just got done moving and I am over worked and under paid and enjoying my new snake room so bare with me.

I think that the cross has already been done...super corns? I think that is what they call them. As far as I know it produces a 6' long corn mutt. But I am by no means an authority on this

Corns and gophers are similar in many ways, but they are different snakes. They have been crossed, so there is no need to do it again. Try the hybrid forum, and ask about gopher corns.

The hybrids are primarily curiosities. In my opinion, they are less pretty than either species and have a much lower market value. So they aren't on my list of interesting breeding projects.

Well, I've only met one gopher snake up close, but it was a completely different snake than a corn. It was bigger, and more importantly, it was meaner. I would never recommend a beginner to reach in and grab a gopher snake, but no problem with my corns. I'm not insulting gopher snakes, but corns are way more docile, with completely different personalities.

Gopher snakes and corns are two completely different genuses and species. From an evolutionary standpoint, one is not a "glorified" form of the other. You will find that most people on this forum do not like hybrids - kingsnake.com has a Hybrid Forum for these discussions.

that is one nice looking snake! is that one of your caramels?

jasonw Nov 30, 2005 01:52 PM

Funny you should mention that. In all my adventures I have found that even the nicest wild Gopher is way more hot tempered than the meanest Rattler. Even my young Gopher that I have maintained for several months and handled on a bidaily basis still takes a shot at me every time I handle it. Anyhoo thanks for the replies

Nope, that's actually a female het creamsicle. I'm going to breed her to this male to make aztec creamsicles and hets next year.
