quick tegu info?

rabidkittycat Nov 30, 2005 03:01 AM

jeez! ive been debating what to get next. ive been thinking iguana, sugar glider, tegu.

i have been trying to choose between a glider an iggy for a few weeks now with not much luck. then it came back into my mind.. "A TEGU!" i wanted one quite some time ago and researched them for a while but got sidetracked and forgot because of home issues.

the problem with the iggy is the size of the cage, i know a tegu will need a pretty big cage but it wont have to be so damn tall. pluss i wont need to make giant batches of fresh greens and veggies all the time.

ive been crusing caresheets again and havent found all of the info i wanted so i had a couple questions if you dont mind answering id apriciate it.

what do you give them for the fruit portion of the diet?
do you give all of the meats raw?
eggs raw or boiled? or should you stay away form eggs in the diet?
any special traits i should know about that caresheets probably wont cover? i know ive had suprises owning reptiles that no one told me about. (like a box turtle that croaks like a frog when hes excited)

thats about it for now, they dont seem incredebly difficult besides from appropiate sized housing. empasis on "incredebly" i know reptiles are NOT a simple pet like a fish or a rat, but they do seem to be alot easier then an iggy.

Hello, I have a B/W Columbian that eats bananas, mangos, grapes and plums.

The meat, I prefer frozen rodents but some people use raw ground turkey mixed with calcium vitamin supplements that needs to be frozen for at lest 2 days.

Cooked eggs are like junk food for Tegus but are a good tool to jump start a Tegu that is being finicky about eating.

A few thing with Tegus, you should never feed them in their main habitat, unless you have a feed door. You need to handle your Tegu as much as possible daily if you can.

I hope that helps.
