i guess i am a little discouraged

raisnok Nov 30, 2005 10:04 AM

neither of my corns have yet to eat sine oct 28.... degei is going through a shed, im hopping after the shed she will eat, naaza is showing no signs of shedding.....im to the point is they dont eat with in a few more weeks i am going to consider giving them up, durga my ball python is still eating like a horse, he has yet to refuse a meal.
i have tried everything with these 2 corns, misting the enclosure to bring up the humidity a bit, raising the temps to nearly 90 degrees.
i have also tried braining a rat pup, scenting with anoles, tuna juice, and live pinkies..... nothing so far has tempted them to eat.
i feel like i am at my wits end.

Have you had them much longer than since Oct, and were they eating for you for awhile? How large are they right now? Decent weight?

Some of our ratsnakes think it's time to hibernate now. I will cool them for at least a few weeks and then see if they cycle back up in terms of eating.

Right now...Most of my larger ratsnakes have stopped eating. My corns, however, are still eating heartily. Some WILL stop, however, this time of year. Duffy

i have had naaza who is a miami phase since march, he is about 34 inches long.......
degei i have had since may, she is a normal corn, she is about 36 inches long.....
both snakes ate a rat fuzzy every sunday, since oct 28.... then they both have not ate since.

Some ratsnakes stop eating this time of year...Others slow WAY down. I have also found that many will accept much smaller prey than they have "graduated" to. A snake that was eating hoppers may prefer a couple of pinkies. A snake that was eating small adult rats may want a rat fuzzy. Smaller meals less often is fairly standard for some. This time of year I don't worry if my snakes stop eating altogether. Of course, I DID worry my first year!

Try smaller meals. If they won't eat at all...Turn off their heat. Put them in the basement (or someplace cool) for a month or so. Then take them back up, warm them up, and watch them eat.

Good luck. You won't fret as much about it next year.

thats what i figured, but i keep having people tell me that my snakes shouldnt be hibernated, since im not going to breed next year... my main problem with brumating is i dont have a basement or a cool place to keep them for that matter.

.....For the next few months just be happy with the idea that your snakes may take "smaller meals less often"...If they won't eat AT ALL then find the coolest spot you can and put them in darkness for a few weeks. Generally, once a snake has been eating and growing for awhile...It won't just let itself starve to death. They may lose some weight over the winter, but they'll be fine. You'd be amazed at how these shorter days can impact them. I just figure that I'm saving money on frozen rodents. I have 11 snakes and this time of year I may thaw enough for 5 or 6. I offer the non-eaters something almost every week and don't worry about it if they don't accept. My whole reptile room may get "unplugged" soon for a couple of months. I have one or two that I may bring upstairs and keep warm this winter. Duffy

Give me a call and we can discuss the differences on how we're raising corns here near the SAME town! All of my babies are eating like pigs: my normals, my okeetees, and my goldens.
