is pine safe?

kirkpatrick Nov 30, 2005 01:17 PM

Im going to build a rack for some of my breeders and want to know what everyone thinks. Will the pine bother my kings? If so I can find a different type of wood.

From what I've researched, pine is fine, but never use cedar. I think the only problem with pine is accidental ingestion, which is a problem with almost all subtrates. But don't take my word for it, there are probably other people who know something that I don't.

Pine has not been proven to be toxic. Cedar has, hence cedar chest to store clothes in (keeps the bugs away). Taxidermists also have cedar closets to store their tanned hides in until mounted (to keep the bugs/moths away etc..). Obviously pine does not affect those pests.

I used pine for years and I eventually switched to aspen because when the water bowl would spill with pine shavings, there would be a heavy wood smell. Harmful? I doubt it. Uncomfortable smell - I'm sure it was. So I switched to aspen.
