Back after 5 year break... WT Road Show

shack Nov 30, 2005 03:34 PM

Hi to everyone. David Shackleton here, was a forum member a few years back. I'm active duty military (USMC), and the past 4 years have taken me out of the picture as Iraq has taken priority for us. I'm now stationed in Virginia, shouldn't need to deploy again for a little while, and am ready to get back into the swing of things. I really missed this forum!

I made one trip to Alpine in July 2000, spent 5 nights with 0 captures and 2 DORs. The weather did not cooperate at all...
I did end up purchasing 2 from a local in Alpine, just don't remember who that was (we met at the McDonalds... or was it Hardees...) He was a forum members unloading a few lower grade animals, and my boys loved them.

My two boys are now 10 and 8, and they are ready to accompany Dad back to Texas. I can't even explain how excited they are to be making this trip! That's all they've talked about for years now.

Anyway, I've targeted the third full week in May, may adjust looking at the lunar schedule, but that's the intent right now.
It's also a 1900 mile drive one-way out there, so it's a pretty big commitment for us.

I'd like to get some specifc updates on collecting and permits. I'd like to focus this time in BG, XMas, and Alpine areas and DON'T want any surprises. I want the boys to have a good first experience as this may set the tone for future generations of Alterna herpers.

Joe and Troy gave me great gouge a few years back. I've spent the week reading recent posts. Willing to take suggestions and guidance from all you experienced herpers out there. Appreciate pointing me in the right direction for permits and hunting safety classes (if needed).

Keep rocking, you've managed to keep this specific interest area up and running, congrats!

Sincerely,
"Shack"
David Shackleton

Get a hunting license . . . if you were born before Sept 1, 1971, you don't need hunter safety . . . your kids don't need individual licenses to hunt small or nongame, they hunt under your guidance and the authority of your license.

This past year, Game Wardens allowed snake hunters to road cruise and spotlight from the car, provided you didn't shine across the road or make a traffic hazard of yourself. I have a series of emails that state this, if you're interested in obtaining them. Sanderson area sheriff's department did insist that you not shine from the improved shoulder as a safety consideration.

I was told by Officer Ray Spears that the Dept's lawyers had told him that public roads that pass throught TPWD property (i.e. fm 2627 through Black Gap WMA and fm 170 through Big Bend Ranch State Natural area) were not part of those areas, and therefore it was legal for collectors to road cruise.

I can also give you the email address of the local warden (Ray Spears) if you'd rather ask him yourself. Shoot me an email if you have any other questions.

I was born Dec 2, 1971, so I guess I need a hunter safety class... Please feel free to contact me via email with any gouge you could provide. Forwarding the emails from the GW or local LE would be helpful as well. stolenvette@gmail.com

Thanks, Shack

Hello, David,
If you stationed in Quantico (and I'm not asking if you are on a public forum), I found the base to be rich in herpertofauna, when I was there in '69.
Lots of tin near the ranges.
Mole Kings, Copperheads, Black Rats, Smooth Earth snakes, Chain Kings, lots of amphibians and lots of preserved habitat.
Good luck.
Semper Fi,
Bill McGighan

Yes, I'm pretty close to Quantico. Haven't tried collecting there, but I guess I should!

Thanks, and Semper Fi!
